Patrick Anderson (wheelchair Basketball)
Patrick Anderson (born 22 August 1979) is a Canadian wheelchair basketball player. Personal life Anderson was born in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada, and he grew up in Fergus, Ontario. At the age of nine he was hit by a drunk driver, and as a result lost both his legs below the knee. Because of this, he is classified as a 4.5-point player for competition. Basketball Anderson is widely considered to be one of the best wheelchair basketball players in the world. He began playing the sport in 1990 and was first chosen for the Canadian national team in 1997. He led the Canadian Junior Men's National Team to victories in the World Championships in 1997 and 2001, and was named MVP at both competitions. At senior level he was a member of the team that won a bronze medal at the 1998 World Championships and was chosen as a member of the all-star team for the event. Erica Gavel (born May 25, 1991) is a Canadian 4.5 point wheelchair basketball player who won a silver medal at the 2015 Parapan American Games in Toronto. In 2016, she was selected as part of the team for the 2016 Summer Paralympics in Rio de Janeiro. Biography Erica Gavel was born in Prince Albert, Saskatchewan, on May 25, 1991. She attended Carlton Comprehensive High School, where she was a promising basketball player. She went on to play for the University of Saskatchewan Huskies. Towards the end of her first year, she suffered a serious knee injury that required surgery. Like most young and fit people, she recovered quickly, and was ready to play again at the start of her second year. She played for most of the season but then tore her cartilage in the same knee. Kady Dandeneau (born January 25, 1990) is a Canadian 4.5 point wheelchair basketball player. In 2018, she was part of the Canadian national women's team for the 2018 Wheelchair Basketball World Championship in Hamburg. Biography Kady Dandeneau was born in Pender Island, British Columbia, on January 25, 1990. She began playing basketball for the University of Northern British Columbia Timberwolves in 2007/08. On January 23, 2010, with an average of 18.3 points per game, she was leading scorer in the BC Colleges Athletic Association, when she collided with an opposition player and suffered what was later determined to most likely have been a partial tear in her anterior cruciate ligament (ACL). This caused her to miss the next five games, but she returned for the last two games of the season, wearing a brace, and shooting an impressive 26 points in the final match. Sandrine Bérubé (born February 5, 1999) is a Canadian 4.5 point wheelchair basketball player who has represented Quebec at both the junior and senior levels. In 2018, she was part of the Canadian national women's team for the 2018 Wheelchair Basketball World Championship in Hamburg. Biography Sandrine Bérubé was born in LaSalle, Quebec, on February 5, 1999. She played ice hockey, soccer, basketball, and baseball, and is a brown belt in karate. In March 2014 she fell while playing ice hockey that left her with plates and screws in her left leg. Unable to play sports that involved running any more, she took up sledge hockey. Tara Janelle Llanes (born November 28, 1976 in West Covina, California United States) is a Bicycle Motocross (BMX) racer and a wheelchair basketball player whose prime competitive years were from 1990-1993. She became a champion Mountain Bike (MTB) racer. She later played wheelchair tennis and wheelchair basketball for Canada. Her surname is pronounced "Yaw-ness" but for obvious reasons it is often mispronounced "lanes" as in the type of division of a pathway. Puisand Lai (born July 29, 2000) is a Canadian wheelchair tennis and 1.0 point wheelchair basketball player. In 2018, she was part of the Canadian national women's wheelchair basketball team at the 2018 Wheelchair Basketball World Championship in Hamburg. Biography Puisand Lai was born in Honolulu County, Hawaii, on July 29, 2000. When she was six years old, she was diagnosed with transverse myelitis, a rare neurological condition in which the spinal cord is inflamed. In October 2013, Lai joined the Mississauga Little Aces program, a project supported by Tennis Canada and run by Albert Fong of Mississagua Little Aces, which teaches tennis to children from ages six to sixteen, and children with disabilities from ages eight to nineteen. Tamara Steeves (born September 23, 1989) is a Canadian 1.5 point wheelchair basketball player from Etobicoke, Ontario who won a gold medal in the 2009 Artland Open which was hosted in Quakenbruck, Germany and in 2011 bronze medal at Osaka Cup which was hosted in Osaka, Japan. Cindy Ouellet (born December 8, 1988) is a Canadian Paralympic wheelchair basketball player. Early life Cindy Ouellet was born on December 8, 1988, in Rivière-du-Loup, Quebec, Canada. At age 12 she was diagnosed with bone cancer which quickly ended her dream of becoming a soccer player and skier. Career Ouellet took up wheelchair basketball in 2005. She is classified as a 3.5 point player. She won a gold medal in 2007 at Canada Games for Quebec, and joined the women's senior team later that year.
