Wheatley (surname)
Wheatley is an English surname which translates into Old English as "from the wheat meadow". Alternative spellings include Wheatly, Whatley, Whitley, Wheetley, and Wheatleigh. Whether this is an association of work, or of origin, is debatable. It is probable that the now fairly common surname and its derivatives originate from one who farms wheat. However, the surname "de Wheatley" ("of Wheatley") was in use from around the 12th century, and ascribed to some of those that came from the town of Wheatley in Oxfordshire, England, which was founded around 956 AD. It was also around the 12th century that the custom of adopting a father's name, or his profession, as a surname, became more prevalent. Other theories ascribe to the belief that most of the ancestry comes from a John Wheatland, who was a very wealthy land owner in Surrey, England. Martin Wheatley is a British financier, formerly managing director of the Consumer and Markets Business Unit of the Financial Services Authority in the UK, and is the former CEO of the Financial Conduct Authority. In London Wheatley worked for the London Stock Exchange for 18 years, including six years on its board. He rose to the position of deputy chief executive, and was closely involved with the failed merger with Deutsche Börse which resulted in the resignation of the LSE's chief executive Gavin Casey. Mark Wheatley (born May 27, 1954) is an American illustrator, writer, editor, and publisher in the comic book field. Wheatley's comic book and pulp creations include ''Breathtaker'', ''Mars'', and '' Blood of the Innocent'', all illustrated with his frequent collaborator Marc Hempel. Wheatley has written books, comic books, and television shows, and his illustrations have appeared in magazines, books, comic books, and games. Kevin Arthur "Dasher" Wheatley, VC (13 March 1937 – 13 November 1965) was an Australian soldier and a recipient of the Victoria Cross, the highest award for gallantry in the face of the enemy that can be awarded to British and Commonwealth forces. Wheatley was one of four Australians to receive the award for actions during the Vietnam War. Early years Wheatley was born in the Sydney suburb of Surry Hills on 13 March 1937, the third child of Raymond and Ivy (née Newman) Wheatley, both natives of Sydney. Keith James Wheatley (born 20 January 1946) is a former English first-class cricketer. Wheatley was born at Guildford in January 1946. He was educated at Lord Wandsworth College, where he played for the college cricket team. Wheatley made his debut in first-class cricket for Hampshire against Leicestershire during the 1965 Bournemouth Cricket Week. He established himself in the Hampshire side in 1966, making 23 appearances. As an all-rounder, he took 31 wickets in 1966 at an average of 28.80; as a consequence of the Test and County Cricket Board introducing a 65 overs limit to the first innings of some matches, Wheatley did not bowl in the first innings of any restricted matches in 1966. Joe Wheatley
Harold Joseph Wheatley (born 9 May 1920) was an English footballer who played for Port Vale and Shrewsbury Town. Career Wheatley played for Ellesmere Port Town before joining Port Vale as an amateur in March 1938, and signing as a professional player the following month. He made his debut in a 1–0 defeat at Clapton Orient on 8 September 1938, but only played one more Third Division South game before World War II brought on the cancellation of football and the onset of the war leagues. He played two league and two cup games during the war and also guested for old club Ellesmere Port when Port Vale shut down due to war strains. He returned to Vale in the summer of 1944 as they commenced regular football, only playing the odd game as he also guested for Wrexham, Stockport County and Chester. The Great British Bake Off (series 2)
The second series of '' The Great British Bake Off'' started 14 August 2011 with twelve amateur bakers. Unlike series one, the competition was held in a single location – the grounds of Valentines Mansion, a 17th-century mansion house in Redbridge. In addition to their on-screen presenting, Mel Giedroyc and Sue Perkins also took over the narration, which had been done by Stephen Noonan for the previous series. Series two also introduced the "star baker" award for the most impressive performer each week. Three and a half thousand people applied for the competition, and twelve were selected.
