Whai Ngata
Tanara Whairiri Kitawhiti "Whai" Ngata (c. 1942 – 3 April 2016) was a Māori broadcaster, journalist, and lexicographer. Ngata worked for Radio New Zealand from 1975 to 1983, before moving to Television New Zealand. He led the Māori department at TVNZ until his retirement in 2008. He helped to write the English–Māori dictionary credited to his father Hōri Mahue Ngata, the grandson of Sir Āpirana Ngata. In the 2007 Queen's Birthday Honours, Ngata was appointed an Officer of the New Zealand Order of Merit, for services to Māori broadcasting and television. Ngata died in Auckland overnight on 2/3 April 2016. He is survived by his mother Mihihara Ngata (née Ngarimu), wife Geraldine and his three sons and their families. The New Zealand Order of Merit is an order of merit in the New Zealand royal honours system. It was established by royal warrant (document), royal warrant on 30 May 1996 by Elizabeth II, Monarchy of New Zealand, Queen of New Zealand, "for those persons who in any field of endeavour, have rendered meritorious service to the Crown and nation or who have become distinguished by their eminence, talents, contributions or other merits", to recognise outstanding service to the Crown and people of New Zealand in a civil or military capacity. Māori People
The Māori (, ) are the indigenous Polynesian people of mainland New Zealand (). Māori originated with settlers from East Polynesia, who arrived in New Zealand in several waves of canoe voyages between roughly 1320 and 1350. Over several centuries in isolation, these settlers developed their own distinctive culture, whose language, mythology, crafts, and performing arts evolved independently from those of other eastern Polynesian cultures. Some early Māori moved to the Chatham Islands, where their descendants became New Zealand's other indigenous Polynesian ethnic group, the Moriori.
