Eduard Weyr
Eduard Weyr (June 22, 1852 – July 23, 1903) was a Czech Republic, Czech mathematician now chiefly remembered as the discoverer of a certain canonical form for square matrices over algebraically closed fields. Weyr presented this form briefly in a paper published in 1885. He followed it up with a more elaborate treatment in a paper published in 1890. This particular canonical form has been named as the Weyr canonical form in a paper by Shapiro published in The American Mathematical Monthly in 1999. Previously, this form has been variously called as ''modified Jordan form'', ''reordered Jordan form'', ''second Jordan form'', and ''H-form''. Weyr's father was a mathematician at a secondary school in Prague, and his older brother, Emil Weyr, was also a mathematician. Weyr studied at Czech Technical University in Prague, Prague Polytechnic and Charles-Ferdinand University in Prague. He received his doctorate from the University of Göttingen in 1873 with dissertation ''Über algebra ...

Pern
''Dragonriders of Pern'' is a science fantasy series written primarily by American author Anne McCaffrey, who initiated it in 1967. Beginning in 2003, her middle child Todd McCaffrey has written Pern novels, both solo and jointly with Anne. The series (as of 2022) comprises 24 novels and two collections of short stories. The two novellas included in the first novel, ''Dragonflight'', made McCaffrey the first woman to win a Hugo Award for writing fiction as well as the first to win a Nebula Award.''Publishers Weekly'' review of Robin Roberts, ''Anne McCaffrey: A Life with Dragons'' (2007)Quoted by Amazon.com Retrieved 2011-07-16. Overview Humans have colonized the planet Pern in the Rukbat star system, but have lost much of their technology and history (including their origin on Earth) due to periodic onslaughts of Thread, a mycorrhizoid spore that voraciously consumes all organic material, including humans and their crops, given the opportunity. Thread comes from the Red St ...

Emil Weyr
Emil Weyr (31 August / 1 September 1848 – 25 January 1894) was an Austrian-Czech mathematician, known for his numerous publications on geometry. Born in Prague, Weyr attended the Prague Polytechnic, where he was taught by Heinrich Durège and Otto Wilhelm Fiedler. Biography Early life The birthdate of Weyr is disputed. Parish records indicate that Emil was born in Prague, on 1 September 1848, whereas his family believed he was born on 31 August 1848 and celebrated his birthday on this date. His parents were František Weyr and Marie Rumplova. František was a mathematics professor at a secondary school Emil would later attend. Emil's parents had ten children, five sons and five daughters. One of his brothers Eduard Weyr, was also a mathematician. Early Education Emil attended Our Lady of the Snows primary school in 1854. Following this he would study at the German secondary school on Mikulandská street in Prague from 1859. By this age Emil was already fascinated by m ...

Rudolf Weyr, from 14 May 1911, Rudolf Ritter von Weyr  (22 March 1847, Vienna - 30 October 1914, Vienna) was an Austrian sculptor in the Neo-Baroque style. Life He studied under Franz Bauer and Josef Cesar and was employed by the latter for many years. In 1875, he was contracted by Gottfried Semper and Carl Hasenauer to assist them with their work on the Kunsthistorisches Museum. In 1879, under the direction of Hans Makart, he designed table settings and other decorative pieces for the Emperor's Silver Wedding Anniversary. From the late 1880s, he worked alone and created some of the most important figures that adorn the Ringstraße. In his later years, Weyr suffered from arteriosclerosis and died of heart failure induced by pneumonia. He was buried in the Döbling Cemetery. In 1919, a street in Landstraße was named the ''Weyrgasse'' in his honor. Major works * 1884: Gable statues at the Hermesvilla * 1888: Spandrel figures in the windows at the Burgtheater * 1889: G ...

Weyr Canonical Form
In mathematics, in linear algebra, a Weyr canonical form (or, Weyr form or Weyr matrix) is a square matrix satisfying certain conditions. A square matrix is said to be ''in'' the Weyr canonical form if the matrix satisfies the conditions defining the Weyr canonical form. The Weyr form was discovered by the Czech Republic, Czech mathematician Eduard Weyr in 1885. The Weyr form did not become popular among mathematicians and it was overshadowed by the closely related, but distinct, canonical form known by the name Jordan normal form, Jordan canonical form. The Weyr form has been rediscovered several times since Weyr’s original discovery in 1885. This form has been variously called as ''modified Jordan form,'' ''reordered Jordan form,'' ''second Jordan form,'' and ''H-form''. The current terminology is credited to Shapiro who introduced it in a paper published in the American Mathematical Monthly in 1999. Recently several applications have been found for the Weyr matrix. Of partic ...
