Westpoint Slough
Westpoint Slough is the largest of several sloughs feeding into Redwood Creek in San Mateo County, California, United States. This slough is surrounded by extensive undisturbed marshlands including Greco Island, which forms its northern boundary. The channel of Westpoint Slough contains considerable mudflat areas; moreover, both the marshes and mudflats offer considerable habitat area for local and migratory wildlife, especially birds. Multinational corporation Cargill currently owns of salt ponds adjacent to part of Westpoint Slough. Cargill, in conjunction with Arizona-based DMB Associates, has proposed a highly controversial development of 32,000 people and 12,000 houses on this open space. Pacific Shores Center sits along Westpoint Slough, as does Westpoint Harbor, which is open to the public. Pacific Shores Center is a high-tech business park located in Redwood City, California, adjacent to the Port of Redwood City. History The property that Pacific Shores Center was developed on had many uses through the years from part of the Redwood City Harbor Company to cement production to being part of saltworks with Leslie Salt. In 1990 the Teachers' Retirement System of the State of Illinois bought of land adjacent to the Port of Redwood City and Westpoint Slough and formed the Pacific Shores Center Partnership to develop it. After many years of planning Redwood City and the partnership had a complete development agreement with plans for a land swap, that decreased the total property to , and public shore space to allow for public use of parts of the property. California Clapper Rail
Ridgway's rail (''Rallus obsoletus'') is a near-threatened species of bird. It is found principally in California's San Francisco Bay to southern Baja California. A member of the rail family, Rallidae, it is a chicken-sized bird that rarely flies. This species is closely related to the clapper rail, and until recently was considered a subspecies. It has a long, downward curving bill and is grayish brown with a pale chestnut breast and conspicuous whitish rump patch. Westpoint Harbor
Westpoint Harbor is a marina that opened in 2008 at the mouth of the Westpoint Slough located in Redwood City, California. History The first development on the site in the 19th century had been a shipbuilding yard with close proximity to a cement factory. After 1918, when the cement plant closed, Leslie Salt used the site as a holding pond for bittern. The marina took over 19 years from when the idea was conceived originally to being constructed completely. Three years were spent obtaining the land from the owner Cargill who owns several nearby salt ponds. An additional 12 years passed obtaining permits from various agencies to commence construction which took another four years due to heavy rains. The Salt pans are shallow and large of size because it will be easier for sunlight to travel and reach the sea water. Natural salt pans are geological formations that are also created by water evaporating and leaving behind salts.
