Westpark Music is a German record label based in Cologne, best known for publishing albums by Gjallarhorn, Oysterband, Hedningarna, Varttina, Bellowhead, Stockholm Lisboa Project, Chumbawamba, Lydie Auvray, Garmarna and many others. Mainly concentrating on folk, folk-rock, folk-metal, ethno-rock, singer-songwriter, ethno, Celtic, fusion, ambient, electronic, progressive and jazz-oriented music. The company was founded in 1987. In addition to producing CDs, the company offers a range of tune books by the accordion player Lydie Auvray and clarinet player Helmut Eisel. Oysterband
Oysterband (originally The Oyster Band) is a British folk rock and folk punk band formed in Canterbury around 1976. History Early history The band formed in parallel to Fiddler's Dram, and under the name "Oyster Ceilidh Band" played purely as a dance band at first. The name Oyster comes from the group's early association with the coastal town of Whitstable, Kent, known for the quality of its oysters. Their first album, released under the Oyster Ceilidh Band name, was ''Jack's Alive'' (1980) on the Dingles record label. Subsequent albums, as "Oyster Band" (sometimes "The Oyster Band") were released on the band's own Pukka Music label: ''English Rock 'n' Roll: The Early Years 1800–1850'' and ''Lie Back and Think of England'', followed by ''Liberty Hall'' and ''20 Golden Tie-Slackeners''. Hedningarna
Hedningarna (''The Heathens'') is a Swedish, and for some years partly Finnish, folk music band that mixes electronics and rock with elements from old Scandinavian folk music. Their music features yoik or juoiggus, a traditional Sami form of song. History Hållbus Totte Mattson, Anders Stake and Björn Tollin formed Hedningarna in 1987. ''Hedning'' is Swedish for , while ''ar'' is the plural suffix, and ''na'' is the definite article (thus ''hedningar'' 'heathens', ''hedningarna'' 'the heathens'). They wanted to go far back to the roots of the Old Norse culture, including the use of ancient instruments not much used in current Swedish folk music. Stake, a trained luthier, also began to invent and build new instruments, to produce new sounds. Bellowhead
Bellowhead is an English contemporary folk band, active from 2004 to 2016, reforming in 2020. The eleven-piece act played traditional dance tunes, folk songs and shanties, with arrangements drawing inspiration from a wide range of musical styles and influences. The band included percussion and a four-piece brass section. Bellowhead's bandmembers played more than 20 instruments among them, whilst all performers provided vocals. Their third album, ''Hedonism'' (2010), is the highest selling independently released folk album of all time, having sold over 60,000 copies and earning the band a silver disk. The band parted after their final gig at Oxford Town Hall in May 2016. Stockholm Lisboa Project
Stockholm Lisboa Project is a Portuguese/Swedish folk music band. History Founded in 2006 they are based in Sweden and Portugal, and have received the German Record Critics' Award (2009 and 2013), was selected for a showcase at Womex in Copenhagen. The band was nominated to the Songlines Music Awards 2010 and also the Swedish Folk & World Music Awards 2012. The group has played live radio concerts for RDP in Portugal (2007, 2008, 2009), SR in Sweden (2007), WDR in Germany (2009), NDR in Germany (2016), YLE in Finland (2008), Spanish National Radio (2011) as well as concerts in festivals and concert halls around the world. Chumbawamba
Chumbawamba () were a British rock band formed in 1982 and disbanded in 2012. They are best known for their 1997 single "Tubthumping", which was nominated for Best British Single at the 1998 Brit Awards. Other singles include "Amnesia", " Enough Is Enough" (with MC Fusion), " Timebomb", "Top of the World (Olé, Olé, Olé)", and "Add Me". The band drew on genres such as punk rock, pop, and folk. Their anarcho-communist political leanings led them to have an irreverent attitude toward authority, and to espouse a variety of political and social causes including animal rights and pacifism (early in their career) and later regarding class struggle, Marxism, feminism, gay liberation, pop culture, and anti-fascism. She lives in Cologne. After finishing school in 1974 she moved to Germany to improve her language skills. She first appeared on stage in Berlin in 1976 and played with folk-singer Jürgen Slopianka. The following year she began touring as an accompanist for various singers in West Germany, including Thommie Bayer and Klaus Hoffmann. With Hoffman she recorded a live double-album, ''Ein Konzert''. Garmarna
Garmarna is a Sweden, Swedish folk rock band. Their songs are mainly old Scandinavian ballads. Biography Garmarna was founded in 1990. Stefan Brisland-Ferner, Gotte Ringqvist and Rickard Westman were inspired by old Swedish music, which they had heard in a theatre. They began searching for old tunes and instruments. After two years of playing together, Jens Höglin joined the band on drums. In 1992 the band recorded their first Extended play, EP. They thought that female vocals would provide a contrast to the dark mood of their music and invited Emma Härdelin, a long-time friend of the band, as the guest vocalist on the EP. She officially joined the band in 1993. The debut EP sold well in Sweden, and helped the band tour in Scandinavia.
