Westlake High School (Louisiana)
Westlake High School is a high school in Westlake, Louisiana. It is a part of Calcasieu Parish Public Schools and was established in 1914. History Until Westlake High's founding in 1914, Westlake students attended Lake Charles High School. Mr. S.P. Arnett organized the establishment of a high school building on Sulphur Avenue. The building was made of red bricks painted yellow, and became known as the "yellow brick building". An auditorium/gymnasium, called the "red brick building," opened in 1936. The first yearbook, "Big Horn," was printed in 1946. That year, homecoming and American football were established. A new high school building was added to the Sulphur Avenue campus in 1949. The high school moved to its current campus on Garden Drive in January 1967, and the Sulphur Avenue campus became known as S.P. Arnett Junior High School (now S.P. Arnett Middle School). Westlake is an industrial city in Calcasieu Parish, in western Louisiana, United States, and is part of the Lake Charles metropolitan statistical area. The population was 4,781 in 2020. Westlake was incorporated in 1945. There are many chemical plants and oil refineries situated around the Westlake area. Geography Westlake is located in east-central Calcasieu Parish at (30.248455, -93.259047), on the west bank of the Calcasieu River, just north of that river's entry into the water body of Lake Charles. The city of Lake Charles borders Westlake across the river, connected via the Interstate 10 bridge. According to the United States Census Bureau, Westlake has a total area of , of which is land and , or 1.49%, is water. Moss Bluff is just to the northeast. Calcasieu Parish (; french: Paroisse de Calcasieu) is a parish located on the southwestern border of the U.S. state of Louisiana. As of the 2020 census, the population was 216,785. The parish seat is Lake Charles. Calcasieu Parish is part of the Lake Charles metropolitan statistical area; it is also located near the Beaumont–Port Arthur (Texas), Lafayette, and Alexandria metropolitan areas. Calcasieu Parish was created March 24, 1840, from the parish of Saint Landry, one of the original nineteen civil parishes established by the Louisiana Legislature in 1807 after the United States acquired the territory in the Louisiana Purchase of 1803. The original parish seat was Comasaque Bluff, a settlement east of the river and later called Marsh Bayou Bluff. On December 8, 1840, it was renamed as Marion, Louisiana.
