Westham Island
Westham Island is an island located near Ladner, British Columbia, Ladner, British Columbia, Canada within the City of Delta, British Columbia, Delta, which in turn is part of Greater Vancouver, Canada. The George C. Reifel Migratory Bird Sanctuary for migratory birds is located at the northern end of the island. The Alaksen National Wildlife Area is also located on the island. The island is accessible via the Westham Island Bridge. The island was named by Harry Trim who came from Westham, Sussex. Westham is a large village and civil parish in the Wealden District, Wealden District of East Sussex, England. The village is adjacent to Pevensey five miles (8 km) north-east of Eastbourne. The parish consists of three settlements: Westham; Stone Cross; and Hankham. The parish is virtually part of the Greater Eastbourne conurbation, and much expansion has been occurring here: hence the large population. History Although overshadowed by its close neighbour, Pevensey, Westham is recorded in the Domesday Book. Its name derives from being a Hamlet (place), hamlet to the west of Pevensey Castle. Governance The parish council has thirteen elected members. Geography The parish lies along a ridge at the western end of the Pevensey Levels, the area once an inlet of the sea. Ladner, British Columbia
Ladner is a part of the City of Delta, British Columbia, Canada, and a suburb of Vancouver, British Columbia. It was created as a fishing village on the banks of the Fraser River. Named for Thomas and William Ladner, who came to the area in 1868 and began large farming and fishing operations, it developed as a centre for these operations. A series of ferries, culminating in the Ladner Ferry, allowed for access across the river to Richmond, British Columbia, Richmond. The George Massey Tunnel provided a permanent connection in 1959. Greater Vancouver, also known as Metro Vancouver, is the metropolitan area with its major urban centre being the city of Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada. Alaksen National Wildlife Area
The Alaksen National Wildlife Area is located on Westham Island in the city of Delta, British Columbia. It is an important stopover point for many species of birds migrating along the Pacific Flyway. Geography The Alaksen Area encompasses the northwestern half of Westham Island, which itself is located within the Fraser River Delta as it enters the Strait of Georgia. The Area comprises mostly cultivated farmland, but also includes freshwater and brackish tidal marshlands, mudflats, and some woodland. In addition to the cultivated crops, the site is vegetated by various grasses in the farmland; cattails, Lyngbye's sedge, and bulrushes in the intertidal zone; and Red alder, willows and Black cottonwood, along with snowberry, salmonberry, and blackberries in the wooded areas. Westham Island Bridge
The Westham Island Bridge, which is a single-lane, wood-deck truss bridge over ''Canoe Pass'' near the mouth of the Fraser River, connects Westham Island with the Delta, British Columbia, Delta mainland, in Greater Vancouver, Metro Vancouver. Original ferry In 1882, the British Union (BU) and the British American (BA) canneries opened at Canoe Pass. Sufficient school age children existed to justify the erection of a schoolhouse and opening of a school in the 1883/84 year. Largely catering to non-resident cannery workers, Paul Swenson operated a ferry for 15 years, but received no government subsidy. The precise period is unclear, but the mid-1880s to early 1900s seems most likely. The BA operated a ferry during the following years.
