Western Hotel (Sacramento)
Western Hotel built in 1853, at 215 K Street, was destroyed on January 9, 1875, fire Western Hotel, was an historical hotel in Sacramento, California. The site of the former hotel is an California Historical Landmark No. 601 listed on May 22, 1957. The Western Hotel was at/near the intersection of 2nd street and K Street, Sacramento and owned by William Land. The site is now a Parking lot under the Interstate 5 in California. The site has had two hotels built at the location: An 1853 Hotel, and later the second Western Hotel, was built on the site in 1875 by William Land. The 1875 Hotel was one of the largest and grandest hotels in the western states at the time of completion. The 1854 Hotel supported the California Gold Rush Pioneers, it was built two blocks from the Sacramento waterfront and Central Pacific Railroad station. A bellhop (North America), or hotel porter (carrier), porter (international), is a hotel employee who helps patrons with their luggage while check-in, checking in or out. The Sacramento Zoo is a zoo located in William Land Park in Sacramento, California. It opened on June 2, 1927, with 40 animals. At that time, it occupied , which remained the case until the early 1960s when the zoo expanded to its current . , the zoo had just over 500 animals on site. History The zoo opened as the "William Land Park Zoo" on June 2, 1927, with 40 animals brought together from various local parks, including monkeys, raccoons, birds, and deer. In 1948, the ''Sacramento Union'' newspaper sponsored a drive to raise money to buy the zoo an elephant. In the fall of 1949, SUE (the “Sacramento Union Elephant”), so named by local teenage sisters Jacklyn and Carolyn Bolton via a contest sponsored by the Union, arrived at the zoo, much to the delight of area visitors. William Land Park
William Land Park, frequently referred to as simply "Land Park" is a major city park in Sacramento, California. The park is located between Interstate 5 and State Route 160. William Land was a pioneer who built the Western Hotel at the NE corner of 2nd and K St in 1875 (California Historical Landmark #601). There is an elementary school named after him. He is buried in a Greek temple mausoleum within East Lawn Memorial Park in Sacramento. William Land was a founder of the East Lawn Memorial.
