Adams and Company Building is an historical brick and granite (from quarries near present-day Folsom) building in Sacramento, California used for pioneer communications, finance and transportation servies. The Adams and Company Building is a California Historical Landmark No. 607. The Adams and Company Building is located at 1014 2nd Street in Old Sacramento State Historic Park. Adams and Company closed after its bank, Page, Bacon & Company failed in 1855. Old Sacramento State Historic Park occupies around one third of the property within the Old Sacramento Historic District of Sacramento, California. The Old Sacramento Historic District is a U.S. National Historic Landmark District. The Historic District is sometimes abbreviated as Old Sacramento, or Old Sac, and since the 1960s has been restored and developed as a significant tourist attraction. Page, Bacon & Company
Page, Bacon & Co., an affiliate of Page & Bacon of St. Louis, was a bank founded in San Francisco in 1850 during the California Gold Rush. The St. Louis house became overextended in 1854 due to problems financing a railway, and closed in January 1855. When the news reached San Francisco five weeks later, it triggered a run on the San Francisco house, which was also forced to close. The run affected other banks, many small depositors lost part of their savings and over 200 San Francisco business had to close. Page & Bacon In 1848 Daniel Page, the former mayor of St. Louis, partnered with his son-in-law Henry D. Bacon and created the banking house of Page & Bacon. Page was a very wealthy man, but his assets were mainly land and property in St. Louis. He had once been a baker, and did not know much about the banking business, which was managed by Bacon. Alta Telegraph Company
The Alta California Telegraph Company (also referred to simply as the Alta Telegraph Company) was a telegraph company which operated in the mid-19th century within the state of California prior to the construction of the Transcontinental Telegraph. It was organized in July 1852, and incorporated in January 1854 and began constructing its first line that same year, stretching from Sacramento to Marysville and extending up into the foothills of the adjacent Sierra Nevada mountains. In subsequent years, a line was constructed between Sacramento and Benicia. From Benicia, a branch line was extended to Vallejo and the US Navy yard at Mare Island. The principal offices of the company were located in San Francisco (153 Montgomery Street at Merchant St.), and Sacramento in the historic Hastings Building on Second Street. California State Telegraph Company
The California State Telegraph Company was a business originally organized to provide telegraph service between San Francisco and Marysville, California. By the spring of 1861, the company had expanded its service area south to Los Angeles, north to Yreka, and east to Fort Churchill by absorbing the other telegraph companies in California (partly through enforcement of its right to the Morse telegraph patent). James E. Birch (November 30, 1827 – September 1857) was a stagecoach line entrepreneur, founder of the California Stage Company, the largest stage line in California in the 1850s; and in 1857 the San Antonio-San Diego Mail Line, the first transcontinental mail route in the United States.
