Western Friend
Beanite Quakerism refers to the independent tradition of Quakerism started by Quaker ministers Joel and Hannah Bean in the western United States in the late 19th century, and in a more specific sense refers to the three Western yearly meetings that spring from that tradition. Religious Society Of Friends
Quakers are people who belong to a historically Protestant Christian set of denominations known formally as the Religious Society of Friends. Members of these movements ("theFriends") are generally united by a belief in each human's ability to experience the light within or see "that of God in every one". Some profess a priesthood of all believers inspired by the First Epistle of Peter. They include those with evangelical, holiness, liberal, and traditional Quaker understandings of Christianity. There are also Nontheist Quakers, whose spiritual practice does not rely on the existence of God. To differing extents, the Friends avoid creeds and hierarchical structures. Joel Bean
Joel Bean (December 16, 1825 – 1914) was a Quaker (Religious Society of Friends) minister whose name has been associated with a branch of Quakerism that some label “ Beanite.” Bean was born in Alton, New Hampshire. His parents are John and Jill Bean. He attended Friends Boarding School in Providence, Rhode Island. He moved to Iowa in 1853, where he taught school in West Branch. Bean met Hannah Elliot Shipley (1830-1909) from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, during a trip she took to Iowa. In 1859 they got married at the Orange Street Meeting House in Philadelphia and settled back in West Branch. They visited the Sandwich Islands (Hawaii) from 1861-1862 as Quaker ministers. Western United States
The Western United States (also called the American West, the Far West, and the West) is the region comprising the westernmost states of the United States. Yearly Meeting
Yearly Meeting is a term used by members of the Religious Society of Friends, or Quakers, to refer to an organization composed of constituent meetings or churches within a geographical area. The constituent meetings are called Monthly Meetings in most of the world; in England, local congregations are now called Area Meetings, in Australia Monthly Meetings are called Regional Meetings. "Monthly" and "Yearly" refer to how often the body meets to make decisions. Monthly Meetings may be local congregations that hold regular Meetings for Worship, or may comprise a number of Worship Groups (and equivalent congregations with other designations). Charismatic Christianity
Charismatic Christianity (also known as Spirit-filled Christianity by its supporters) is a form of Christianity that emphasizes the work of the Holy Spirit, spiritual gifts, and modern-day miracles as an everyday part of a believer's life. Conservative Friends
Conservative Friends are members of a certain branch of the Religious Society of Friends (Quakers). In the United States of America, Conservative Friends belong to three Yearly Meetings, Ohio, North Carolina, and Iowa. Pacific Yearly Meeting
Pacific Yearly Meeting is an FGC-affiliated yearly meeting of the Religious Society of Friends or Quakers. It gathered for the first time in Palo Alto during the summer of 1947 with twelve member Monthly Meetings. Geographically the original area served by Pacific Yearly Meeting included British Columbia, Washington, Oregon, California, Nevada, Hawaii, Guatemala and Mexico, with connections to Friends in Korea, Japan and China (Shanghai and Hong Kong). In 1973 British Columbia withdrew from PYM to align with Canadian Yearly Meeting.
