Western Creek is a locality in the Toowoomba Region, Queensland, Australia. In the , Western Creek had a population of 15 people. Geography The creek of the same name rises in the east of the locality and flows west through the locality into neighbouring locality of Weir River where it becomes a tributary of the river of the same name. Most of Western Creek is within the Western Creek State Forest with only a few small areas of farmland and undeveloped land in the northern, eastern and southern parts of the locality. History The locality takes its name from the parish, which in turn was named after an early pastoral run Western Creek belonging to James Laidley during the 1840s. In 1849 it was taken over by Captain Frances Durrell Vignoles in 1849, who held it for about thirty years, but problems with grass seed and his sheep ruined him financially. Electoral District Of Southern Downs
Southern Downs is an electoral district of the Legislative Assembly in the Australian state of Queensland. It was created in 2001 as a replacement for Warwick. The district takes in the southern parts of the Darling Downs region along the New South Wales border. It includes the major towns of Warwick, Stanthorpe and Goondiwindi and extends westward almost to St George. Darling Downs
The Darling Downs is a farming region on the western slopes of the Great Dividing Range in southern Queensland, Australia. The Downs are to the west of South East Queensland and are one of the major regions of Queensland. The name was generally applied to an area approximating to that of the Condamine River catchment upstream of Condamine township but is now applied to a wider region comprising the Southern Downs, Western Downs, Toowoomba and Goondiwindi local authority areas. The name Darling Downs was given in 1827 by Allan Cunningham, the first European explorer to reach the area and recognises the then Governor of New South Wales, Ralph Darling. James Laidley
James Turquand Laidley (1823 – 29 March 1877) was a pastoralist and Member of the Queensland Legislative Council in the colony of Queensland (later a state of Australia). Early life James Turquand Laidley was born in 1823 in Sydney, New South Wales, the son of James Laidley and Eliza Jane (née Shepheard). Pastoralism Laidley acquired Western Creek Station on the Darling Downs in 1848. From 1849 to 1879 he was in partnership with his brother-in-law Henry Mort (married to Laidley's sister Maria) in a pastoral property called Franklyn Vale at Mount Mort, Queensland. Politics Laidley was appointed to the Queensland Legislative Council on the 1 May 1860 and served until his resignation on the 16 August 1864. The Weir River, a river that is part of the Border Rivers group and also forms part of the Barwon River catchment in the Murray–Darling basin, is located in the Darling Downs region of Queensland, Australia. Location and features The headwaters of the river rise on the western slopes of the Great Dividing Range in the Dunmore State forest and flow in a south westerly direction. The river continues through the Booroondoo State Forest the crosses the Leichhardt Highway then flows past Currajong and Goodar and then veers west. It continues running almost parallel with the Barwon Highway near Bungunya the later veers south west again crossing the highway just east of Talwood. The Toowoomba Region is a local government area located in the Darling Downs part of Queensland, Australia. Established in 2008, it was preceded by several previous local government areas with histories extending back to the early 1900s and beyond.
