West Liss
West Liss is the oldest part of the modern village of Liss, in Hampshire Hampshire (, ; abbreviated to Hants) is a ceremonial county, ceremonial and non-metropolitan county, non-metropolitan counties of England, county in western South East England on the coast of the English Channel. Home to two major English citi ..., England. It has two pubs, called The Spread Eagle and The Blue Bell, although the Blue Bell is currently shut and expected to be converted into housing or torn down and new buildings put in its place. The Liss Cricket Club is also based in West Liss. It has a picturesque ground with a quirky fixture of a short boundary due to a large over-hanging oak tree. St Mary's Church stands in West Liss and was designed by Sir Arthur Blomfield and consecrated 1892. The composer Michael Hurd lived at 4, Church Street from 1961 until his death in 2006. East Hampshire
East Hampshire is a local government district in Hampshire, England. Its council is based in Petersfield. Other towns are Alton and Bordon. The district was originally to be known as the District Council of Petersfield. It comprised 42 seats and first met on 18 June 1973. For ten months it operated alongside the councils that it was formed to replace: the Alton and Petersfield urban districts along with Alton Rural District and Petersfield Rural District. On 8 October 1973, the new council changed its name to the current East Hampshire District Council (or EHDC as it is usually known). On 1 April 1974, the old councils were dissolved, leaving only EHDC. Sandy Hopkins was the first joint Chief Executive in Hampshire when she was appointed to head both EHDC and Havant Borough Council in October 2009. Liss (England)
Liss (previously spelt Lys or Lyss) is a village and civil parish in the East Hampshire district of Hampshire, 3.3 miles (5.3 km) north-east of Petersfield, on the A3 road, on the West Sussex border. It covers 3,567 acres (14 km2) of semi-rural countryside in the South Downs National Park. Liss railway station is on the Portsmouth Direct Line. The village comprises an old village at West Liss and a modern village round the 19th-century station. They are divided by the River Rother. Suburbs later spread towards Liss Forest. Michael Hurd (composer)
Michael John Hurd (19 December 1928 – 8 August 2006) was a composer, teacher and author, principally known for his dramatic cantatas for schools and for his choral music. Life He was born in Gloucester on 19 December 1928 and educated at The Crypt School, Gloucester, and Pembroke College, Oxford, where he studied music with Thomas Armstrong and Bernard Rose.Geoffrey BushMichael Hurd, in Grove Music Online/ref> He was also a composition pupil of Lennox Berkeley. After National Service he taught at the Royal Marines Band School at Deal, (1953–59) before settling as a freelance composer in East Hampshire, where he took a leading role in the area's music-making.
