Welsh PGA Championship
The Welsh National PGA Championship is a golf tournament played annually in Wales since 1904. For many years the event was called the Welsh Professional Championship. Currently entry is restricted to professionals employed by a Welsh club and those born in Wales or with a parent or grandparent born in Wales. 2016 was the 100th edition of the event and was won by Lydia Hall after a final round 67. History The first Championship was held at Radyr Golf Club on 15 July 1904. It was a 36-hole stroke-play event played on a single day. There were 19 entries. Tom Brace led after a 79 in the morning but fell away after an afternoon 92. The winner was the Tenby professional, Arthur Day, who had rounds of 81 and 80 for a total of 161. This put him three strokes ahead of the joint runners-up, 20-year-old George Duncan and Bill Leaver, who had finished 8th in the 1903 Open Championship. Sion Bebb
Sion Emrys Bebb (born 3 October 1968) is a Welsh professional golfer. Bebb was born in Church Village, Mid Glamorgan, and is the son of former Welsh international rugby player Dewi Bebb. He turned professional in 1986 and worked for many years as a club professional before forging a tournament career. He has struggled to establish himself on the top level European Tour and has visited qualifying school many times, successfully regaining his card in 2006 and 2007. Bebb first gained his card on the European Tour through the 2006 qualifying school, having spent many years on the second-tier Challenge Tour. He had claimed his first win at that level earlier in 2006, at the Ryder Cup Wales Challenge, the week after his wife had given birth to their second child. Jimmy Buckley (golfer)
James Brian Buckley, ( – 21 March 1943) was a Royal Navy Fleet Air Arm pilot who became a notable prisoner of war during the Second World War. He died during an escape attempt on 21 March 1943. Fleet Air Arm Buckley's naval career began in the mid-1920s. He was commissioned as a sub-lieutenant in the Royal Navy with seniority from 15 June 1926. He then spent much of his early career attached to the Royal Air Force (which then controlled the naval aviation requirements of the British Armed Forces), interspersed with periods of other naval duties. He continued to receive regular promotions within the Royal Navy during this period, to lieutenant on 1 December 1928, and lieutenant commander on 1 December 1936. Control of naval aviation returned to the Admiralty in 1939. Buckley assumed command of No. 825 Squadron Fleet Air Arm in January 1940, which was equipped with Fairey Swordfish aircraft. Stuart Manley
Stuart Manley (born 15 January 1979) is a Welsh professional golfer. Early life Manley was born in Mountain Ash in the historic county of Glamorgan. He showed sporting promise at an early age, and at age 16 had trials with the football clubs Manchester United, Crystal Palace and Luton Town. However, he chose to concentrate on golf, taking a four-year scholarship to the University of West Florida. The highlight of his amateur career was playing in the 2003 Walker Cup. Stephen Christopher Dodd (born 15 July 1966) is a Welsh professional golfer who after a moderate career, unexpectedly won two events on the European Tour in the 2005 season at the age of 38 and won a third time in 2006. He also won the 2005 WGC-World Cup in partnership with Bradley Dredge. Since turning 50 he has won four times on the European Senior Tour, including the 2021 Senior Open Championship. Garry Houston
Garry Houston (born 12 May 1971) is a Welsh professional golfer. Career Houston began his golfing career as a caddie, and won the Welsh Amateur in 1994 before turning professional in 1995. He began playing on the second-tier Challenge Tour in 2000, and at the end of that season won promotion to the European Tour via qualifying school. He returned to the Challenge Tour for 2002 however, and played there for the following three seasons. In 2004 he won his first Challenge Tour title at the Galeria Kaufhof Pokal Challenge, and finished the season tenth in the rankings to earn a return to the European Tour. Mark Pilkington (born 17 March 1978) is a Welsh professional golfer. Career Pilkington was born in Bangor, Gwynedd. He enjoyed a successful amateur career, representing Wales at all levels, and highlighted by winning the Welsh Amateur Championship in 1998. He turned professional later that year, immediately after winning a place on the European Tour at final qualifying school.
