Wellsboro Historic District, is a national historic district in Wellsboro, Tioga County, Pennsylvania, United States. It includes 531 contributing buildings, three contributing sites, and four contributing objects. It is a district that is a mixed use commercial / residential / institutional district. The historic structures date from 1835 to the 1950s and include the Tioga County Court House (1835), Arcadia Theater (1924), First Presbyterian Church (1894), Green Free Library, Penn-Wells Hotel (c. 1910), First Presbyterian Church (1894), St. Paul's Episcopal Church (1899), United Methodist Church of Wellsboro (1905), and Wellsboro Diner (1939). Wellsboro, Pennsylvania
Wellsboro is a borough in Tioga County, Pennsylvania. The borough was founded by Benjamin Wistar Morris. It is located northwest of Williamsport. The population was 3,472 at the 2020 census. Early in the 20th century, Wellsboro was the shipping point and trade center for a large area. It had fruit evaporators, flour and woolen mills, a milk-condensing plant, marble works, saw mills, foundry and machine shops, and manufactories of cut glass, chemicals, rugs, bolts, cigars, carriages, and furniture. In 1900, 2,945 people lived here; in 1910, 3,183 lived here. It is the county seat of Tioga County, and also home to the Grand Canyon of Pennsylvania. History Wellsboro was settled in 1806 and incorporated in 1830 and was named in honor of Mary Wells, wife of one of the original settlers, Benjamin Wistar Morris. The town was the home of George W. William Halsey Wood
William Halsey Wood (April 24, 1855 – March 13, 1897) was an American architect. Early life Wood was the youngest of four sons born to Daniel Halsey Wood and Hannah Lippincott Wood. Shortly after his birth in 1855, the family relocated from Dansville, New York to Newark, New Jersey, where Daniel Wood's company manufactured varnish. Family spiritual life centered around the House of Prayer, an Anglo-Catholic congregation where the children were introduced to ritualist liturgy and William became a member of the choir, eventually serving as its director. Wood prepared for the architectural profession in a typical nineteenth-century pattern of practical experience and apprenticeship. During an unspecified time circa 1880, he is reported to have traveled to England and gained employment in the office of George Frederick Bodley, a leading figure in the High-church or Anglo-Catholic movement within the Anglican Communion. Tioga County is a county in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. As of the 2020 census, the population was 41,045. Its county seat is Wellsboro. The county was created on March 26, 1804, from part of Lycoming County and later organized in 1812. It is named for the Tioga River. History The county was colonized by people of Yankee stock (colonists from New England and the western part of New York who were descended from the English Puritans of colonial New England). With the opening of a rough wagon road to the source of the Tioga River, New England colonists poured over the Allegheny Mountains. Jesse Robinson House (Wellsboro, Pennsylvania)
Jesse Robinson House, or Jesse Robinson Manor, is a historic home located at Wellsboro in Tioga County, Pennsylvania, United States. It is a three-story Queen Anne style house built in 1888, designed by Elmira architects Pierce & Dockstader for Jesse Robinson. It features a steeply pitched roof, specially cut wood shingle siding in the dormer areas, and a wrap-around, lattice-trimmed porch. The house features two prominent balconies and many stained glass windows. The house has been a hospital in the past and privately owned by several owners. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1991. Wellsboro Armory
Wellsboro Armory, is a historic National Guard armory located in Wellsboro, Pennsylvania, in Tioga County. It was built in 1932 for the Company I, 103rd Medical Regiment of the Pennsylvania National Guard. The armory consists of a brick building laid out on an "I" plan, with a two-story drill hall sandwiched between a two-story administrative section and two-story garage. The Wellsboro Armory was formerly home to Charlie Company 3/103rd AR before the unit moved to Mansfield, PA to join the ranks with D 3/103rd. Delta was later disbanded. Charlie Company relocated to 1810 Shumway Hill Rd in 2003. The former building still exists but is not used for that purpose anymore. It is the headquarters for Charlie Company 3/103rd AR. The armory is home to 6(six) full-time personnel including 2(two) recruiters and 4(four) maintenance personnel. It was built in 2004 for the purpose of training unit members.
