Wellington Theatre Awards
The Ngā Whakarākei O Whātaitai / Wellington Theatre Awards are the main theatre awards in New Zealand's capital city, Wellington established in 2015 after the previous awards sponsor ended their support. They are awarded annually. The previous awards were called the Chapman Tripp Theatre Awards, established in 1992 and sponsored by law firm Chapman Tripp. 2022 awards Presented at a ceremony at the Hannah Playhouse on Sunday 11th December 2022. Wellington
Wellington ( mi, Te Whanganui-a-Tara or ) is the capital city of New Zealand. It is located at the south-western tip of the North Island, between Cook Strait and the Remutaka Range. Theatre for Young Audiences (TYA), also youth theatre, theatre for children, and children's theatre is a branch of theatre arts that encompasses all forms of theatre that are attended by or created for younger audiences. It blankets many different forms of theatre methods and expressions, including plays, dance, music, puppetry, circus, physical theatre, and many others. It is globally practiced, takes many forms, both traditional and non-traditional, and explores a wide variety of themes ranging from fairy tales to parental abuse. Originating in the 20th century, TYA takes on many functions in different settings and places around the world. Tiki Taane
Tiki Taane (born 17 December 1976) is a New Zealand-based musician, experimentalist, musical activist, producer, and live engineer. He was a member of leading New Zealand band Salmonella Dub but left after eleven years on 1 January 2007 to pursue a solo career. His debut album, '' Past, Present, Future'', was released on 22 October 2007 in New Zealand and has since gone two times platinum, achieving a number one single, " Always on My Mind", which became the first digital single to reach platinum sales and also held the record by staying in the NZ Top 40 Charts for 55 weeks. Justin Lester (politician)
Justin Mark Lester (born 23 December 1978) is a New Zealand businessman and politician. He was Mayor of Wellington between 2016 and 2019, following six years on the Wellington City Council. Early life and career Lester is from Invercargill, where he lived with his mother and two brothers in a state house. Lester has an LLB and BA (German) from the University of Otago and a Masters of Laws (LLM) from the University of Heidelberg in Germany. Anapela Polataivao
Anapela Polataivao is a New Zealand actor, writer, and director of stage and screen. Background Polataivao was born in Samoa and has heritage from Vailoa, Vaiusu, Fagae'e and Safune. She grew up in South Auckland. Career Polataivao began acting as a child with her role at the age of eight. She was part of the Maidment Youth Theatre at the University of Auckland and in 2000 graduated from the New Zealand drama school Toi Whakaari with a Bachelor of Performing Arts (Acting). Sue Paterson
Sue Paterson (1953–2018) was a New Zealand theatre and festival director. In 2017 she was named Senior New Zealander of the Year. Biography Paterson was born in Wellington, New Zealand. Her father was a marine engineer from Aberdeen, Scotland, and her mother was a hotel administrator. She studied journalism at Wellington Polytechnic in the early 1970s, with Michael King and Christine Cole Catley as tutors. Her first position in the arts industry was as an administrator at the Australian Elizabethan Theatre Trust. From 1979 to 1986, Paterson was general manager of Limbs Dance Company. Joanna Ruth Randerson (born 1973) is a New Zealand writer, director and performer. She is the founder and artistic director of Barbarian Productions, a Wellington-based theatre production company. Biography Randerson was born in Auckland, New Zealand, in 1973 and moved to Wellington when she was four years old. She studied at Wellington Girls' College, and then went on to Victoria University of Wellington to major in English, theatre and film. She wrote, directed and performed in theatre productions for the Victoria University of Wellington Student Drama Club. Jason Te Kare is a New Zealand director, playwright and actor. Early life and education Te Kare graduated from Toi Whakaari: New Zealand Drama School in 2001 with a Bachelor of Performing Arts (Acting). Work Te Kare played Ty in the premiere Downstage Theatre production of Hone Kouka's '' The Prophet'' in 1994, directed by Nina Nawalowalo. Mitch Tawhi Thomas (Ngāti Maniapoto) is a New Zealand playwright, actor and drama teacher. Education Thomas affiliates to Ngāti Maniapoto. Carolyn Henwood
Dame Carolyn Henwood (née Griffiths; born 19 September 1946) is a former District and Youth Court judge in New Zealand, and an advocate for youth justice and the welfare of children in state care.
