Sue Paterson
Sue Paterson (1953–2018) was a New Zealand theatre and festival director. In 2017 she was named Senior New Zealander of the Year. Biography Paterson was born in Wellington, New Zealand. Her father was a marine engineer from Aberdeen, Scotland, and her mother was a hotel administrator. She studied journalism at Wellington Polytechnic in the early 1970s, with Michael King and Christine Cole Catley as tutors. Her first position in the arts industry was as an administrator at the Australian Elizabethan Theatre Trust. From 1979 to 1986, Paterson was general manager of Limbs Dance Company. She was marketing director of the biennial New Zealand Festival from 1994 to 1998, moved to the Royal New Zealand Ballet, where she was general manager from 1999 to 2006. In 2009 she went back to the New Zealand Festival and was executive director from 2009 which included the Wellington Jazz Festival. New Zealander Of The Year Awards
The New Zealander of the Year Awards, currently known as the Kiwibank New Zealander of the Year Awards, celebrate the achievements of New Zealanders, and were founded in 2010 by Australian Jeffrey John Hopp. Nominations are accepted from the general public and a judging panel selects finalists in each category. Michael King (historian)
Michael King (15 December 1945 – 30 March 2004) was a New Zealand historian, author, and biographer. He wrote or edited over 30 books on New Zealand topics, including the best-selling ''Penguin History of New Zealand'', which was the most popular New Zealand book of 2004. Life King was born in Wellington, one of four children to Eleanor and Lewis King, and grew up at Paremata. His Glasgow-born father was an advertising executive who had left New Zealand to serve as a naval officer in World War II and had risen to the rank of lieutenant-commander. King's family moved to Auckland for a while, where he attended Sacred Heart College, then returned to Wellington, where he attended St Patrick's College, Silverstream in Upper Hutt. Christine Cole Catley
Dame Christine McKelvie Cole Catley (née Bull; 19 December 1922 – 21 August 2011) was a New Zealand journalist, publisher and author. Career Christine McKelvie Bull was born in 1922 in Wellington, New Zealand. She grew up on a farm in Hunterville, Rangitikei and began writing while still at school, freelancing for the ''Taranaki Daily News''. She won a scholarship to the University of Canterbury and moved to Christchurch, where she also worked as a part-time reporter for ''The Press'' newspaper while studying. While in Christchurch, she met and became friends with the artist Rita Angus, who painted her and her first child in a portrait entitled ''Mother and Child'' in 1945. In 1946, Cole Catley moved to Wellington and began writing for the Labour Party's daily paper, ''The Southern Cross'', the New Zealand Listener, and Radio New Zealand. Australian Elizabethan Theatre Trust
The Australian Elizabethan Theatre Trust is a theatre and performing arts company that was founded in September 1954, with the aim of establishing drama, opera and ballet companies nationally. Founding In 1954 the Australian Elizabethan Theatre Trust was established under the guidance of H.C. Coombs, Governor of the Commonwealth Bank, sir Charles Moses GM of the Australian Broadcasting Commission and John Douglas Pringle of the Sydney Morning Herald" to provide a theatre of Australians by Australians for Australians". Limbs Dance Company
The Limbs Dance Company was formed in Auckland, New Zealand in May 1977 and disbanded in Wellington in September 1989. Limbs was "the first contemporary dance company in New Zealand to win a general following", and performed alongside notable New Zealand acts such as Split Enz. Choreographers included Mary Jane O'Reilly, Chris Jannides, Mark Baldwin (choreographer), Mark Baldwin, Douglas Wright (dancer), Douglas Wright, Marianne Schultz and Shona McCullagh. Dorothea Ashbridge was the resident ballet mistress. Aotearoa New Zealand Festival is a multi-arts biennial festival based in Wellington New Zealand that started in 1986. Previous names are the New Zealand International Festival of the Arts, New Zealand International Arts Festival, New Zealand Arts Festival and New Zealand Festival of the Arts. The festival is produced every two years and runs across three weeks in venues in Wellington City and outreach programmes in the region. The Royal New Zealand Ballet is a ballet company based in Wellington, New Zealand. It was originally known as The New Zealand Ballet Company. The New Zealand Order of Merit is an order of merit in the New Zealand royal honours system.
