Weldon, North Carolina
Weldon is a town in Halifax County, North Carolina, United States. The population was 1,655 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Roanoke Rapids, North Carolina Micropolitan Statistical Area. History In 1752, Daniel Weldon purchased 1,273 acres of land on the Roanoke River. His plantation became known as Weldon's Landing. As it was just below the fall line, Weldon's Landing was the westernmost point of navigation along the Roanoke. The Roanoke Canal was built in 1823 to bypass the rapids and open up trade to Virginia. The aqueduct across Chockoyotte creek was built near Weldon's Landing, bringing an economic boom to the area. The canal is now dry, and is a hiking trail open to the public. Weldon was the first railroad hub in the American South. The Seaboard and Roanoke Railroad terminated in Weldon. In 1841, the Wilmington and Weldon Railroad was completed, also terminating in Weldon. Halifax County Schools (North Carolina)
Halifax County Schools is a PK– 12 graded school district serving Halifax County, North Carolina. Its 10 schools serve 2,566 students as of the 2016–17 school year. History In 1969, the North Carolina General Assembly had authorized the town of Scotland Neck to form its own school district. The United States Justice Department filed a suit and the United States District Courts blocked the split later that year. The state and the new Scotland Neck school board appealed. Eventually the case was appealed to the United States Supreme Court in 1971. The Supreme Court ruled against the split in June, 1972. A 2011 report by the University of North Carolina Center for Civil Rights found that segregation and inequality still exists in Halifax County because of the three separate city and county school systems. Roanoke Rapids Graded School District
The Roanoke Rapids Graded School District (RRGSD) is a school district headquartered in Roanoke Rapids, North Carolina. History Recognizing the serious need for additional educational opportunities in Roanoke Rapids, a group of residents asked the North Carolina General Assembly to grant them a charter for a school district. It was adopted February 26, 1907. In 1908, A.E. Akers was chosen among 70 applicants as the first superintendent at an annual salary of $1,000. Akers was also required to teach the sixth and seventh grades. A bond issue to build Roanoke Rapids High School was approved in 1920. Hobart Upjohn, a noted New York architect, was chosen to design the very best possible facility for the students and the community.
