''Weed'' is the tenth album by singer-songwriter and guitarist, Chris Whitley. It is his eighth studio album. The album is Whitley's acoustic re-recording of a selection of songs he wrote from 1986 to 1996 for his three recordings on Columbia / Work Records: ''Living with the Law'' (1991), ''Din of Ecstasy'' (1995), and ''Terra Incognita'' (1997). It was produced and recorded by Chris Whitley live to a two-track MD in Susann Bürger's bathroom / Sebnitzer Straße and Space House / Katharinenstraße in Dresden, Germany. Chris Whitley
Christopher Becker Whitley (August 31, 1960 – November 20, 2005) was an American blues/rock singer-songwriter and guitarist. During his 25-year career he released more than a dozen albums, had two songs in the top 50 of the Billboard mainstream rock charts and received two Independent Music Awards. Whitley's sound was drawn from the traditions of blues, jazz and rock and he recorded songs by artists from many genres. He died in 2005 of lung cancer at the age of 45. Early life Whitley was born in Houston, Texas and learned to play guitar when he was fifteen. His father was an art director and his mother was a sculptor. During his youth he lived in Dallas, Texas, Oklahoma, Connecticut, Mexico and Vermont. ''Terra Incognita'' is the third studio album by singer-songwriter and guitarist, Chris Whitley, released in 1997. It was produced primarily by Chris Whitley, Toby Wright, and Dougie Bowne. The album was recorded primarily by Mark Howard (assisted by Wayne Lorenz) at Boulevard Teatro in Oxnard, California. It was mixed primarily by Toby Wright (assisted by John Seymour) at Electric Lady Studios in New York City. Additional recording was done by Dinky Dawson at the Best Western Highway Inn in Salem, Oregon ("As Flat as the Earth (exp)"), by Chris Whitley at the Sheffield Holiday Inn in Sheffield, Alabama ("Immortal Blues"), and by Toby Wright at Electric Lady Studios in New York City ("Alien"). MiniDisc
MiniDisc (MD) is an erasable magneto-optical disc-based data storage format offering a capacity of 60, 74, and later, 80 minutes of digitized audio. Sony announced the MiniDisc in September 1992 and released it in November of that year for sale in Japan and in December in Europe, North America, and other countries. The music format was based on ATRAC audio data compression, Sony's own proprietary compression code. Its successor, Hi-MD, would later introduce the option of linear PCM digital recording to meet audio quality comparable to that of a compact disc. MiniDiscs were very popular in Japan and found moderate success in Europe; although it was designed to be the successor of the cassette tape, it did not manage to mass replace it globally. Blues is a music genre and musical form which originated in the Deep South of the United States around the 1860s.
