Wayne Cheverie
Wayne D. Cheverie (born May 19, 1950) is a Canadian former attorney, politician, government minister and currently a justice of the Supreme Court of Prince Edward Island He was born in Charlottetown, the son of Charles George Cheverie and Clara Austin, and was educated at the University of Prince Edward Island and the Dalhousie Law School and made a career as an attorney in private practice. In 1975, he married Theresa Bennett. Elected to the legislature in 1986, Cheverie served in various cabinet posts including Minister of Justice, Attorney General, Minister of Labour, Minister of Health and Social Services and Provincial Treasurer in the Prince Edward Island government under the administrations of Joe Ghiz and Catherine Callbeck. Cheverie ran unsuccessfully for the leadership of the Prince Edward Island Liberal Party in 1996 against Daniel Mullen, Keith Milligan, and Ian "Tex" MacDonald, ultimately losing to Milligan. Charlottetown
Charlottetown is the capital and largest city of the Canadian province of Prince Edward Island, and the county seat of Queens County. Named after Queen Charlotte, Charlottetown was an unincorporated town until it was incorporated as a city in 1855. It was the site of the famous Charlottetown Conference in 1864, the first gathering of Canadian and Maritime statesmen to discuss the proposed Maritime Union. This conference led, instead, to the union of British North American colonies in 1867, which was the beginning of the Canadian confederation. PEI, however, did not join Confederation until 1873. From this, the city adopted as its motto ''Cunabula Foederis'', "Birthplace of Confederation". The Prince Edward Island Regulatory and Appeals Commission, informally shortened to the Island Regulatory and Appeals Commission or IRAC, is the independent tribunal and regulating arm of the Government of Prince Edward Island. IRAC was established in 1991 following the amalgamation of the former Public Utilities Commission, the Land Use Commission and the Office of the Director of Residential Rental Property. It is governed under the ''Island Regulatory and Appeals Commission Act''. IRAC reports directly to the Legislative Assembly of Prince Edward Island, currently through the Minister of Education and Early Childhood Development. Pat Binns
Patrick George Binns (born October 8, 1948), is a Canadian diplomat, the 30th premier of Prince Edward Island from 1996 to 2007 and Canadian Ambassador to Ireland from 2007 to 2010. Binns has a long history of public service, most notably being the 30th Premier of PEI for 11 years, during which time he was the leader of the Progressive Conservative Party of Prince Edward Island. During his premiership, Binns was known as the province's "affable and unassuming premier." He also served as Canada's Consul General in Boston, Massachusetts. Before the premiership Binns was born in Weyburn, Saskatchewan, and graduated from the University of Alberta in 1969 with a Bachelor of Arts. The University of Prince Edward Island (UPEI) is a public university in Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island, Canada, and the only university in the province. Founded in 1969, the enabling legislation is the ''University Act, R.S.P.E.I 2000.'' History The university traces its roots back to 1804, when Lt. Governor Edmund Fanning and the Legislative Council of Prince Edward Island called for the establishment of Kent College. By 1820, the first Kent College building, known as "the National School", or James Breading's School was erected. Later succeeded by Central Academy, which received a Royal Charter in 1834. The Colleges were renamed for the Prince of Wales in honour of the future King Edward VII in 1860. Ian MacDonald, colloquially known as "Tex", is a former public school teacher, who was the 43rd Mayor of Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island, Canada. MacDonald served as a councilor on Charlottetown City Council during the late 1980s and early 1990s, culminating in the mayorship from 1992 to 1997. MacDonald was a prominent member of the Progressive Conservative Party of Prince Edward Island prior to publicly switching to the Prince Edward Island Liberal Party to run for that party's leadership which became vacant with the resignation of Premier Catherine Callbeck in 1996. MacDonald ran unsuccessfully for the Liberal leadership against Daniel Mullen, Keith Milligan, and Wayne Cheverie.
