Ian MacDonald (politician)
Ian MacDonald, colloquially known as "Tex", is a former public school teacher, who was the 43rd Mayor of Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island, Canada. MacDonald served as a councilor on Charlottetown City Council during the late 1980s and early 1990s, culminating in the mayorship from 1992 to 1997. MacDonald was a prominent member of the Progressive Conservative Party of Prince Edward Island prior to publicly switching to the Prince Edward Island Liberal Party to run for that party's leadership which became vacant with the resignation of Premier Catherine Callbeck in 1996. MacDonald ran unsuccessfully for the Liberal leadership against Daniel Mullen, Keith Milligan, and Wayne Cheverie. MacDonald returned to teaching at Colonel Gray High School before retiring in the early 2000s. Charlottetown
Charlottetown is the capital and largest city of the Canadian province of Prince Edward Island, and the county seat of Queens County. Named after Queen Charlotte, Charlottetown was an unincorporated town until it was incorporated as a city in 1855. It was the site of the famous Charlottetown Conference in 1864, the first gathering of Canadian and Maritime statesmen to discuss the proposed Maritime Union. This conference led, instead, to the union of British North American colonies in 1867, which was the beginning of the Canadian confederation. PEI, however, did not join Confederation until 1873. From this, the city adopted as its motto ''Cunabula Foederis'', "Birthplace of Confederation". Prince Edward Island (PEI; ) is one of the thirteen provinces and territories of Canada. It is the smallest province in terms of land area and population, but the most densely populated. The island has several nicknames: "Garden of the Gulf", "Birthplace of Confederation" and "Cradle of Confederation". Its capital and largest city is Charlottetown. The Progressive Conservative Party of Prince Edward Island is one of three major political parties on Prince Edward Island. The party and its rival, the Liberals, have alternated in power since responsible government was granted in 1851. The Prince Edward Island Liberal Party (officially the ''Prince Edward Island Liberal Association'') is a political party in the province of Prince Edward Island, Canada. The PEI Liberals are affiliated with the federal Liberal Party of Canada. History The party was created when PEI was a British colony by reformers who agitated for the system of responsible government. This was granted by the British crown to the colony in 1851. George Coles was its dominant figure in its first decades. Catherine Callbeck
Catherine Sophia Callbeck (born July 25, 1939) is a Canadian retired politician and the current and ninth Chancellor of the University of Prince Edward Island. She was the 28th premier of Prince Edward Island from 1993 to 1996, the third female premier in Canadian history, and the first to win a general election (the first female premier, Rita Johnston of British Columbia, became premier after winning the party leadership but lost the subsequent election; the second, Nellie Cournoyea of the Northwest Territories, was elected premier by MLAs following a non-partisan consensus government election). Keith Milligan
Keith Wayne Milligan (born February 8, 1950 in Inverness) was the 29th premier of Prince Edward Island, serving for seven weeks in the autumn of 1996. He was educated at Inverness District School, O'Leary Regional High School and the University of PEI, where he obtained Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Education degrees. Wayne D. Cheverie (born May 19, 1950) is a Canadian former attorney, politician, government minister and currently a justice of the Supreme Court of Prince Edward Island He was born in Charlottetown, the son of Charles George Cheverie and Clara Austin, and was educated at the University of Prince Edward Island and the Dalhousie Law School and made a career as an attorney in private practice. In 1975, he married Theresa Bennett. Robert Watson Joseph Ghiz (born January 21, 1974) is a Canadian politician who served as the 31st premier of Prince Edward Island from 2007 to 2015. He is the son of the 27th premier, Joe Ghiz. On November 13, 2014 Ghiz announced he would be resigning as Premier in early 2015 as soon as the Liberal Party elected a new leader.
