Washington, D.C. Mayoral Election, 2018
On November 6, 2018, Washington, D.C., held an Mayoral elections in Washington, D.C., election for its mayor. Incumbent District of Columbia Democratic State Committee, Democrat Muriel Bowser won re-election, becoming the first Mayor to do so for Washington, D.C., since Anthony A. Williams won a second term in 2002. In the first 80 days of her re-election campaign, Bowser raised about $1.4 million for her campaign fund. She had no serious challengers in the Primary election, primary, with only some little-known candidates filing to run against her. Bowser won the June 19 primary with 80% of the vote. The Council of the District of Columbia is the legislative branch of the local government of the District of Columbia, the capital of the United States. As permitted in the United States Constitution, the district is not part of any U.S. state and is overseen directly by the federal government. Since 1975, the United States Congress has devolved to the Council certain powers that are typically exercised by city councils elsewhere in the country, as well as many powers normally held by state legislatures. However, the Constitution vests Congress with ultimate authority over the federal district, and therefore all acts of the council are subject to congressional review.
