Warring Worms
''Warring Worms'' is an Atari 2600 video game based on the 1976 arcade game ''Blockade'' (the concept of which has since become known as "Snake"). ''Warring Worms'' was written by Billy Eno and published in 2002 under the Baroque Gaming label. It was Eno's first released 2600 game. An updated version was released in 2005 as ''Warring Worms: The Worm (Re)Turns''. It has additional modes such as random mode, in which the game options are randomized between each round. At 8 KB it is double the game's original size of 4 KB. Gameplay ''Warring Worms'' is an action game, similar to the Atari 2600 launch title ''Surround'', which itself is based on the 1976 ''Blockade'' arcade game. Like ''Surround'', the player wins a round by forcing the opponent to crash into a wall. The opponent is controlled by either a second player or the game's AI, depending on the game selection. Snake (video Game)
Snake is a sub-genre of action video games where the player maneuvers the end of a growing line, often themed as a snake. The player must keep the snake from colliding with both other obstacles and itself, which gets harder as the snake lengthens. The concept originated in the 1976 two-player arcade video game ''Blockade'' from Gremlin Industries, and the ease of implementation has led to hundreds of versions (some of which have the word ''snake'' or ''worm'' in the title) for many platforms. 1982's ''Tron'' arcade game, based on the film, includes snake gameplay for the single-player Light Cycle segment. The Atari 2600, initially branded as the Atari Video Computer System (Atari VCS) from its release until November 1982, is a home video game console developed and produced by Atari, Inc. Released in September 1977, it popularized microprocessor-based hardware and games stored on swappable ROM cartridges, a format first used with the Fairchild Channel F in 1976. ''Blockade'' is a monochrome arcade video game developed by Gremlin and released in November 1976. It was the first of what would become known as " snake games". It was designed by Lane Hauck, Ago Kiss, and Bob Pecarero. In Japan, it was distributed by Taito in 1977 as "Barricade II". Gameplay Using four directional buttons, each player moves their character around leaving a solid line behind them, turning at 90 degree angles. To win, a player must last longer than the opponent before hitting something, with the first person to hit something losing. The game ends after one player gains six wins. Reception ''Blockade'' was first demonstrated at the AMOA show in November 1976. A joystick, sometimes called a flight stick, is an input device consisting of a stick that pivots on a base and reports its angle or direction to the device it is controlling. Simon Carless is a video game industry businessperson and former game designer and editor. Simon is the founder of GameDiscoverCo, a video game discoverability consultancy firm, and previously worked overseeing the worldwide Game Developers Conference event and Black Hat information security events. Carless is Chairman Emeritus of the Independent Games Festival, and he co-founded the Independent Games Summit as part of Game Developers Conference in 2007. Carless formerly edited the games section on Slashdot, and he worked as a lead game designer at Kuju Entertainment, Eidos Interactive and Atari. AtariAge is a website focusing on classic Atari video games. The site features gaming news, historical archives, discussion forums, and an online store. It was founded in 1998.
