Warren Brown (sailor)
Warren Brown (1929 – 25 December 2014) was a Bermudian sailor and businessman. He took part in the Newport-Bermuda Race 20 times in 11 different boats, including four of his own. Bermuda Race
The Newport Bermuda Race, commonly known as the ''Bermuda Race'', is a biennial, 635 nautical miles (1175 km) sailing yacht race from Newport, Rhode Island to the British island of Bermuda. According to its website, the Race is the oldest regularly scheduled ocean race, and one of two regularly scheduled races "held almost entirely out of sight of land." Indian Harbor Yacht Club has recorded more entries in the Newport Bermuda Race than any other yacht club in the world. In a typical race, the fleet enters the Atlantic and the Gulf Stream, with rough water, giving the race its nickname, "The Thrash to the Onion Patch." Once through the rough Gulf Stream, the sailors press on to the finish off St. David's Lighthouse, then winding channel to Hamilton, Bermuda to the Royal Bermuda Yacht Club. ''The Royal Gazette'' is a Bermudian, English-language daily newspaper. Founded in 1828, it is Bermuda's only daily newspaper (not published on Sundays and public holidays). History The first issues of The Royal Gazette, Bermuda Commercial and General Advertiser and Recorder were published in January 1828. The company bore no relation to an earlier publication named the Bermuda Gazette and Weekly Advertiser founded by Joseph Stockdale in 1782 nor an earlier Royal Gazette founded by Mr Edmund Ward in 1809. Its founder Donald MacPhee Lee, an immigrant to Bermuda from Prince Edward Island in Canada, served as editor until his death in 1883, whereupon it was operated by his son and later his daughter. Part commercial printer and part newspaper, the company acquired its Royal title serving as the 'King's Printer' in Bermuda and as publisher of official notices. RMS Fort Victoria
''Fort Victoria'' was a cruise ship which was built in 1912 as ''Willochra''. During the First World War she was requisitioned for use as a troopship. In 1920 she was sold and renamed ''Fort Victoria'', serving until lost in a collision in 1929. History ''Willochra'' was built by William Beardmore & Co Ltd, Dalmuir, West Dunbartonshire. She was yard number 507 and was launched on 14 August 1912. Completion was on 7 February 1913. ''Willochra'' was built for the Adelaide Steamship Company. Her identical sister ships, also built by William Beardmore and Company, were SS '' Warilda'' (1911) and '' Wandilla'' (1912). In 1913, ''Willochra'' was chartered by the Union Steamship Company of New Zealand. ''Algonquin'' was an ocean liner built in 1926 for the Clyde-Mallory Line. She was involved in a collision in 1929 and rescued survivors from another in 1935. Repaired after a fire in 1940, she was requisitioned for use as a troopship and later a hospital ship. She served until 1946 when she was laid up, finally being scrapped in 1957. History ''Algonquin'' was built by Newport News Shipbuilding and Drydock Company, Newport News, Virginia. She was yard number 317 and was launched on 9 September 1926 and completed in December that year. ''Algonquin'' was built for the Clyde Mallory Line and her port of registry was New York. On 18 December 1929, ''Algonquin'' was in collision with in the Ambrose Channel, off New York in thick fog.
