Warkworth Railway Station
Warkworth railway station served the village of Warkworth, Northumberland, England, from 1847 to 1962 on the East Coast Main Line. History The station was opened on 1 July 1847 by the York, Newcastle and Berwick Railway. Benjamin Green was the station's architect. It was situated north of the Station Road level crossing near Houndean Mill, between Warkworth and the hamlet of Eastfield. Two sidings served the coal depot south of the up passenger platform while the goods shed was to the north, also on the up side. Two sidings south of the down side passenger platform served the cattle dock. Warkworth was one of the stations to remain open from 1941 to 1946. In 1951, only 1,023 tickets were sold in the year, an average of three a day. Warkworth eventually closed to passengers on 15 September 1958 and closed totally after goods traffic stopped on 2 April 1962. Warkworth, Northumberland
Warkworth is a village in Northumberland, England. It is probably best known for its well-preserved medieval castle, church and hermitage. The population of Warkworth was 1,493 in 2001, increasing to 1,574 at the 2011 Census. The village is situated in a loop of the River Coquet, about from the Northumberland coast and lies on the main A1068 road. It is north of Newcastle, and about south of the Scottish border. An ancient bridge of two arches crosses the river at Warkworth, with a fortified gateway on the road mounting to the castle, the site of which is surrounded on three sides by the river. The York, Newcastle and Berwick Railway (YN&BR) was an English railway company formed in 1847 by the amalgamation of the York and Newcastle Railway and the Newcastle and Berwick Railway. Both companies were part of the group of business interests controlled by George Hudson, the so-called ''Railway King''. In collaboration with the York and North Midland Railway and other lines he controlled, he planned that the YN&BR would form the major part of a continuous railway between London and Edinburgh. North Eastern Railway (United Kingdom)
The North Eastern Railway (NER) was an English railway company. It was incorporated in 1854 by the combination of several existing railway companies. Later, it was amalgamated with other railways to form the London and North Eastern Railway at the Grouping in 1923. Its main line survives to the present day as part of the East Coast Main Line between London and Edinburgh. Unlike many other pre-Grouping companies the NER had a relatively compact territory, in which it had a near monopoly. North Eastern Region Of British Railways
The North Eastern Region was a region of British Railways from 1948, whose operating area could be identified by the orange signs and colour schemes that adorned its stations and other railway buildings. It was merged with the Eastern Region in 1967. It was the near direct post-nationalisation descendant of the North Eastern Railway, that had merged with some other companies to form the LNER in 1923.
