The current Speaker of the National Assembly is Tulia Ackson, who presides over a unicameral assembly of 393 members. History The National Assembly of Tanzania was formed as the Legislative Council of Tanzania Mainland – then known as Tanganyika – in 1926. The Council was formed under a law enacted by the British Parliament called the Tanganyika Legislative Council Order and Council. The law was gazetted in Tanganyika on 18 June 1926. The Council consisted of 20 members when it was formed on 7 December 1926 under the Chairmanship of the Governor of Tanganyika, Sir Donald Cameron. The Zanzibar House of Representatives is the unicameral, subnational legislature of the autonomous islands of Zanzibar in Tanzania. History The current legislature was formed in 1980. Prior to this, the Revolutionary Council held both the executive and legislative functions for 16 years following the Zanzibar Revolution in 1964. Current composition ACT-Wazalendo achieved more than 10% of the vote and thus was included into the Government of National Unity according to the Zanzibar constitution. Mohamed Mchengerwa (born September 1, 1979) is a current member of the Tanzanian Cabinet and is a Minister in the president's office in Tanzania. He is a member of the Chama Cha Mapinduzi political party. He was elected MP representing Rufiji in 2015. Political career Mchengerwa got his first major cabinet position following the formation of Samia Suluhu Hassan first cabinet on March 31, 2021. He was sworn in as the Minister of State in the Presidents office for Public Service Management and Good Governance. Samia Suluhu Hassan (born 27 January 1960) is a Tanzanian politician who has been serving since 19 March 2021 as the sixth (and first female) president of Tanzania. She is a member of the ruling social-democrat Chama Cha Mapinduzi (CCM) party and the third female head of government of an East African Community (EAC) country. Upon the death in office of President John Magufuli, she was sworn in as president. A native of Zanzibar, Suluhu served as a minister in the semi-autonomous region during the administration of President Amani Karume.
