Wangaratta Festival Of Jazz
The Wangaratta Festival of Jazz is an annual Australian festival of jazz and blues, founded in 1990 by the City of Wangaratta with Adrian Jackson as its first director. It is held at various venues in the town of Wangaratta, north east of the state capital, Melbourne. Since its inception the festival has grown to include 90 events and over 350 national and international artists performing each year. The Wangaratta Festival of Jazz also hosts the National Jazz Awards, Youth Jazz Workshops, master classes and events throughout Wangaratta and surrounding wine regions. In 1999 the festival won a National Tourism Award and was inducted into the Victorian Tourism Hall of Fame. In 2000 the Wangaratta Festival of Jazz became a Victorian Hallmark Event. Jo Lawry is an Australian singer and musician. Lawry's debut album, ''I Want to Be Happy'', was released in 2008. ''Down Beat'' magazine gave it 4.5 out of 5 and selected it as one of the "Best CDs of the 2000s". Music career Jo Lawry was raised on an almond farm in South Australia. She studied jazz at Adelaide University and the New England Conservatory of Music in Boston. Elana Stone is an Australian singer, songwriter, multi-instrumentalist and bandleader. Her debut solo album, ''In the Garden of Wild Things'', was released in 2005 on the Jazzgroove label. Matt McMahon (pianist)
Matt McMahon is an Australian jazz pianist and composer. (many references to McMahon in this book) Winning the 'Wangaratta National Jazz Piano Award' in 1999, and the 'Freedman Jazz Fellowship' in 2005 established his place in Australian jazz. In 2010 his trio supported the Wayne Shorter Quartet at Sydney Opera House. Additionally he has played or recorded with many known jazz artists including Dale Barlow, Greg Osby, Phil Slater, Joseph Tawadros, Katie Noonan, Dave Panichi and Steve Hunter. Three of the CDs he recorded with Joseph Tawadros won the Australian Recording Industry Award for the best New World Music Album. Tim Hopkins, (born in Auckland, New Zealand) is an Australian jazz musician who won the Australian National Jazz Award at the Wangaratta Festival of Jazz in 1993. Career Growing up in Brisbane, Australia, Hopkins had planned a career in graphic arts, but took up the saxophone at age 15.
