Wanda Von Debschitz-Kunowski
Wanda von Debschitz-Kunowski (née Wanda von Kunowski; 8 January 1870 – 23 April 1935) was a German portrait photographer based in Munich. Life Kunowski was born in Hammer, Kreis Czarnikau, province of Posen, she was the daughter of August von Kunowski and Helene von Bethe. She was the first wife of Wilhelm von Debschitz; there were three children born of that marriage, including daughter Wanda Ziegert von Debschitz and Irene von Debschitz who would later marry Bauhausler Xanti Schawinsky. From 1902 through 1914, she worked at the Debschitz School, first in the metal workshop (1902-1905) and later teaching photography (1905-1914). Kreis Czarnikau
Kreis Czarnikau was one of many Kreise (counties) in Regierungsbezirk Bromberg, in the Prussian Province of Posen. It existed from 1816 to 1920 and had its capital at Czarnikau. Today, the area of this district belongs to Poland and is part of the Greater Poland Voivodeship. History The district area became part of Prussia after the First Partition of Poland in 1772. The ''district of Czarnikau was'' formed on July 1, 1816. On January 1, 1818, the new district of Chodziesen (later renamed Kolmar in Posen) was formed from the eastern part of the Czarnikau district. On October 1, 1887, the new Filehne district was formed from the western part of the Czarnikau district. By the Treaty of Versailles, the district was divided on January 10, 1920. The Province of Posen (german: Provinz Posen, pl, Prowincja Poznańska) was a province of the Kingdom of Prussia from 1848 to 1920. Posen was established in 1848 following the Greater Poland Uprising as a successor to the Grand Duchy of Posen, which in turn was annexed by Prussia in 1815 from Napoleon's Duchy of Warsaw. It became part of the German Empire in 1871. After World War I, Posen was briefly part of the Free State of Prussia within Weimar Germany, but was dissolved in 1920 when most of its territory was ceded to the Second Polish Republic by the Treaty of Versailles, and the remaining German territory was later re-organized into Posen-West Prussia in 1922. Wilhelm Siegfried Kurt von Debschitz (21 February 1871 – 10 March 1948) was a German painter, interior designer, craftsman, art teacher and founding director of an influential art school in Munich. Early life and education He was born on 21 February 1871 in Görlitz, Germany to a family from the nobility of Upper Lusatia; his parents were the Prussian lieutenant general Kolmar von Debschitz (1809–1878) and Pauline von der Borne (1830–1912). He initially sought to follow in his father's footsteps by pursuing a military career as a Prussian officer cadet, but abandoned this and went to live in Munich from 1891. He elected instead to follow an artistic career, inspired by the drawings of Heinrich Knirr and an unknown painter, probably Heinrich Nauen. Alexander Schawinsky, known as Xanti Schawinsky (March 25, 1904 – September 11, 1979) was a Swiss painter, photographer and theatre designer. An alumnus of the Bauhaus, Schawinsky belonged to Bauhaus founder and architect Walter Gropius' social circle. Early life Shawinsky was born March 25, 1904, in Basel, the second child of Benjamin Schawinsky and Regina Bielawska, both of Polish-Jewish descent. Schawinsky attended school in Basel from 1910 to 1914, and then high school in Zurich from 1915 to 1921. He apprenticed at the architecture office of Theodor Merill in Cologne until 1923. After visiting the Berlin School of Applied Arts for a short time in 1923, Schawinsky enrolled in the Bauhaus in Weimar in 1924. Cami Stone (born Camille Honorine Schammelhout; 1892–1975) was a Belgian photographer. She had a certain notoriety in the Berlin of the 1920s, then in Brussels. She was invited to participate in the famous Film und Foto exhibition in Stuttgart in 1929. After her work was rediscovered, her photographs were put up for sale in major auction houses. Sasha Stone, born Aleksander Steinsapir (December 19, 1895 – August 6, 1940) was a Russian artist. A stateless photographer, he and his first wife, Cami Stone (born Wilhelmine Schammelhout 1892-1975), were successful photographers during the 1920s and 1930s. One of his most known work is the cover of Walter Benjamin's book ''Einbahnstraße'' (''One-Way Street'') published in 1928. Biography Sasha was born as Aleksander Steinsapir to Jewish parents, Natan Steinsapir and Bella Meerson, in Saint Petersburg, Russia. He studied electrical engineering at Warsaw Technical Institute in Poland from 1911 to 1913.
