Radial Engine
The radial engine is a reciprocating type internal combustion engine configuration in which the cylinders "radiate" outward from a central crankcase like the spokes of a wheel. It resembles a stylized star when viewed from the front, and is called a "star engine" in some other languages. The radial configuration was commonly used for aircraft engines before gas turbine engines became predominant. Engine operation Since the axes of the cylinders are coplanar, the connecting rods cannot all be directly attached to the crankshaft unless mechanically complex forked connecting rods are used, none of which have been successful. Walter Aircraft Engines
Walter Aircraft Engines is an aircraft engine manufacturer and former automotive manufacturer. Its notable products include the M601 turboprop. The company is based in Prague, Czech Republic. It has been a subsidiary of GE Aviation since July 2008. History Josef Walter founded the company in 1911 to make motorcycles and motor tricycles. It started to make automobiles in 1913: initially its own models, and later the Fiat 508, 514, 522 and 524 under licence. By 1926 Walter was Czechoslovakia's fourth-largest car maker by sales volume. In 1929 it still held fourth place, and production peaked at 1,498 cars for the year. By 1932 Walter production had slumped to 217 cars for the year. The figure recovered to 474 in 1933, but fell again to 102 in 1936 and to only 13 in 1937. Walter ceased car production in 1954. ANBO V
The ANBO V was a parasol wing monoplane training aircraft designed for the Lithuanian Army in 1931. A developed version, the ANBO 51 followed in 1936 and 1938. Design The ANBO V was of conventional configuration with fixed, tailwheel undercarriage. The pilot and instructor sat in tandem open cockpits. The prototype was powered by a Walter Vega I engine, but the small series produced had either Walter Venus or Armstrong Siddeley Genet Major engines. In 1936, an improved version appeared, designated ANBO 51, which was Genet-powered and featured strengthened wings. The ANBO 51 was a fabric covered aircraft with a welded steel tube fuselage structure and steel framed rudder and elevators. Avia BH-11
__NOTOC__ The Avia BH-11 was a two-seat sport aircraft built in Czechoslovakia in 1923, a further development of the Avia BH-9. The main changes in this version involved a redesign of the forward fuselage. 15 examples were ordered by the Czechoslovakian Army as trainers and general liaison aircraft, and operated under the military designation B.11. Six years after the BH-11 first flew, a new version was produced for the civil market as the BH-11B Antelope. This replaced the original Walter NZ 60 45 kW (60 hp) engine with a Walter Vega of 63 kW (85 hp) and was built in small numbers. Couzinet 22
The Couzinet 20 was a low power, three-engined aircraft designed in France in 1929 for postal duties, though it could have been configured to carry three passengers or as a medical transport. Variants flew with three different engines but only two airframes were completed. Design The Couzinet 20 strongly resembled the earlier Couzinet 10 ''Arc-en-Ciel'' but was markedly smaller, with a span reduced by about 40%. The smaller dimensions meant there was no longer access to the outboard engines in flight (both types were tri-motors) but the Type 20 was more advanced in having a retractable undercarriage. Pander E
The Pander E was the first indigenous Dutch training aircraft, used by clubs and also privately owned. A two-seat, single-engine biplane, 17 were built in the Netherlands from 1926 with engines of increasing power. Design and development Pander followed their first aircraft, the small, single-seat monoplane Pander D with a two-seat, low-powered biplane for club and training use. The P.W.S.8 was a 1930 Polish sports plane, constructed by the '' Podlaska Wytwórnia Samolotów'' (PWS), that remained a prototype.
