Walter Loosli
Walter Robert Loosli (29 July 1932 – 29 November 2015) was a Swiss sculptor, woodcut engraver and maker of painted stained glass panels and windows. Loosli was born in La Chaux-d'Abel, a part of Sonvilier in the canton of Bern, Switzerland. He trained first as a primary school teacher and therapist in Bern, but went on to further training in the School of Art (''Kunstgewerbeschule'') in Bern. He learned drawing with Hans Schwarzenbach and Max von Mühlenen. He also studied sculpture with Salvatore Meli in Rome. Since 1972 Loosli has worked as an independent artist. His principal activity is the fitting-out and decoration of rooms, particularly churches. Loosli has lived since 1954 in the village of Köniz, where he also has a gallery. Swiss People

Köniz
Köniz (, ) is a statistical town, however considers itself still as a village, and a municipality in the Bern-Mittelland administrative district right on the southern border to Bern in the canton of Bern in Switzerland. The municipality of Köniz as a single settlement would belong to the 15 most populous towns in Switzerland. It is also part of the larger agglomeration of Bern of about 400,000 inhabitants. The official language of Köniz is (the Swiss variety of Standard) German, but the main spoken language is the local variant of the Alemannic Swiss German dialect. Kappelen
Kappelen (french: Chapelle) is a municipality in the Seeland administrative district in the canton of Bern in Switzerland. History Kappelen is first mentioned in 1228 as ''Capella''. The Roman road between Aventicum and Petinesca ran along the present day border of the municipality. During the Middle Ages, one of the major landowners in the village was the Counts of Neuchâtel-Nidau. The count granted Frienisberg Abbey land in Kappelen in 1225 and 1267. They gave Gottstatt Monastery patronage over the village church in 1247. The monastery held that right until 1528, when it was taken by Bern. Even after they granted land to the monasteries, the counts retained the right to collect a tithe from the village. The Counts of Neuchâtel-Aarberg originally had the right to hold the low court in the village. In 1367 this right went to Nidau and in 1377-79 it went to the city of Bern. Rüegsau
Rüegsau is a municipality in the administrative district of Emmental in the Swiss canton of Bern. History Rüegsau is first mentioned in 1139 as ''Ruxow''. In 1229 it was mentioned as ''Ruchisowe''. The name comes from ''ruggere aue'', in modern German ''ruhe Aue'', meaning ''calm floodplain''. From the late 13th century until 1528 it was the location of Rüegsau Priory, a Benedictine nunnery. The oldest trace of a settlement is a neolithic artifact discovered in Rüegsau village. The first trace of a modern settlement is in the first half of the 12th century when Rüegsau Abbey was probably founded. While very little is known about the early history of the abbey, it was probably founded by Thüring von Lützelflüh around the same time that he founded Trub Abbey. Woodcut
Woodcut is a relief printing technique in printmaking. An artist carves an image into the surface of a block of wood—typically with gouges—leaving the printing parts level with the surface while removing the non-printing parts. Areas that the artist cuts away carry no ink, while characters or images at surface level carry the ink to produce the print. The block is cut along the wood grain (unlike wood engraving, where the block is cut in the end-grain). The surface is covered with ink by rolling over the surface with an ink-covered roller (brayer), leaving ink upon the flat surface but not in the non-printing areas. Multiple colors can be printed by keying the paper to a frame around the woodblocks (using a different block for each color).
