Walter Blackman
Walter Blackman (born 1965/1966) is an American politician serving as a member of the Arizona House of Representatives from the 6th district. He is the first Black Republican elected to the Arizona State Legislature. Blackman served 21 years in the United States Army, earning a Bronze Star for combat action as a tank commander in Iraq. Early life and education Blackman was born on an Army base in Portugal, where his father served as an officer in the United States Air Force Security Forces. He was raised in Wiesbaden, Germany. Career Blackman served in the United States Army for 21 years as a front line tank commander, and a sexual harassment and assault prevention Senior Program Manager specialist. He earned a Bronze Star for combat action in Iraq, and a Meritorious Service Medal. From 2016 to 2018, he was the founder, President, and Chief Executive Officer of WB Inclusion and Diversity Consulting Firm, LLC in Snowflake, Arizona.

Arizona's 6th Legislative District
Arizona's 6th legislative district is one of 30 in the state, consisting of all of Apache County and sections of Coconino County, Gila County, Graham County, Arizona, Graham County, Mohave County, Navajo County, and Pinal County. As of 2023, there are 108 precincts in the district, with a total registered voter population of 151,306. The district has an overall population of 225,474. Following the 2020 United States redistricting cycle, the Redistricting in Arizona, Arizona Independent Redistricting Commission (AIRC) redrew legislative district boundaries in Arizona. The 6th district was drawn to guarantee ''a majority Native American constituency'', with 61% of residents being non-Hispanic Native Americans. On , George Floyd, a 46-year-old black man, was murdered in the U.S. city of Minneapolis by Derek Chauvin, a 44-year-old white police officer. Floyd had been arrested on suspicion of using a counterfeit $20 bill. Chauvin knelt on Floyd's neck for over nine minutes while Floyd was handcuffed and lying face-down in a street.
