Wallingford Grammar School
Wallingford Grammar School was a grammar school in the town of Wallingford, Oxfordshire (formerly Berkshire), England, succeeded by Wallingford School when comprehensive education was introduced in 1973. History When Walter Bigg, thought to have been Innkeeper of St Giles in the Fields, a Sheriff of London, Master of the Worshipful Company of Merchant Taylors, and member of parliament, MP for Wallingford, died in 1659, he left £10 for the education of six poor boys at a school in Wallingford. The Wallingford Corporation Minute Book shows that the school was active in 1672. The school buildings were at St John's Green from 1717–80, through a lease bought with Bigg's endowment. When the lease ended the school transferred to the headmaster's house, and later the upper room in the Town Hall was used a school room until 1863, when the school briefly closed. Walter Bigg
Walter Bigg (1606 – 5 August 1659) was an English merchant and politician who sat in the House of Commons of England, House of Commons in 1659. Bigg was the son of Walter Bigg Senior of Wallingford, Oxfordshire, Wallingford in Berkshire and Crowmarsh Gifford in Oxfordshire. He lived in the parish of St Giles in the Fields and was a citizen of London and a member of the Worshipful Company of Merchant Taylors. On 6 September 1653 he was elected alderman of the City of London for Castle Baynard ward. He was Sheriff of London in 1654 and Master of the Merchant Taylors for 1654 to 1655. In 1657 he became alderman for Cripplegate ward. In 1659, Bigg was elected Member of Parliament for Wallingford (UK Parliament constituency), Wallingford in the Third Protectorate Parliament. He was the founder of Wallingford School. His son, John Bigg (MP), John Bigg, was MP for Huntingdon (UK Parliament constituency), Huntingdon in 1689. References

This is a list of some of the endowed schools in England and Wales existing in the early part of the 19th century. It is based on the antiquarian Nicholas Carlisle's survey of "Endowed Grammar Schools" published in 1818 with descriptions of 475 schools but the comments are referenced also to the work of the Endowed Schools Commission half a century later. Most English and Welsh endowed schools were at the time described as grammar schools, but by the eighteenth century there were three groups: older prestigious schools becoming known as "public schools"; schools in manufacturing towns that innovated to some extent in syllabus; and more traditional grammar schools in market towns and rural areas. Ann Packer
Ann Elizabeth Packer MBE (born 8 March 1942) is an English former sprinter, hurdler and long jumper. She won a gold medal in the 800 metres and a silver in the 400 metres at the 1964 Summer Olympics. Early life In 1959 Packer won the English Schools 100 yards title. Next year she competed internationally in the long jump. She attended Didcot Girls' Grammar School (now Didcot Girls' School). Career In 1962, she reached the finals in the 200 metres at the European Championships and in the 80 metres hurdles at the Commonwealth Games; she was also part of the 4 × 110 yards relay team that won two medals at these competitions. In 1963 she focused on the 400 metres, and already by her fourth 400m race ran a world-level time of 53.6 seconds. The Society for French Studies, or SFS, is the oldest learned association for French Studies in the UK and Ireland. It aims to promote teaching and research in French Studies within higher education. the president is Professor Judith Still. Marshal Foch Professor Of French Literature
The position of Marshal Foch Professor of French Literature at the University of Oxford was founded in 1918 shortly after the end of the First World War. Ferdinand Foch, or "Marshal Foch", was supreme commander of Allied forces from April 1918 onwards. The chair was endowed by an arms trader, Basil Zaharoff, in Foch's honour; he also endowed a post in English Literature at the University of Paris in honour of the British Field Marshal Earl Haig. Zaharoff wanted the University of Paris to have a right of veto over the appointment, but Oxford would not accept this. The compromise reached was that Paris should have a representative on the appointing committee (although this provision was later removed). Michael Sheringham
Michael Hugh Tempest Sheringham FBA (1948 – 21 January 2016) was Marshal Foch Professor of French Literature at the University of Oxford from 2004 until his retirement in 2015. He had previously acted a lecturer at University of Kent and University of Ulster Biography Sheringham was born in Cairo on 2 June 1948. Royal Army Ordnance Corps
The Royal Army Ordnance Corps (RAOC) was a corps of the British Army. At its renaming as a Royal Corps in 1918 it was both a supply and repair corps. In the supply area it had responsibility for weapons, armoured vehicles and other military equipment, ammunition and clothing and certain minor functions such as laundry, mobile baths and photography. The RAOC was also responsible for a major element of the repair of Army equipment. In 1942 the latter function was transferred to the Royal Electrical and Mechanical Engineers (REME) and the vehicle storage and spares responsibilities of the Royal Army Service Corps were in turn passed over to the RAOC.
