Wallace MacDonald
Wallace Archibald MacDonald (5 May 1891 – 30 October 1978) was a Canadian silent film actor and film producer. Biography MacDonald was born in Mulgrave, Nova Scotia, Canada, and attended school in Sydney, Nova Scotia. He started as a messenger boy with the Dominion Steel Company in Sydney, Nova Scotia. He later worked up to teller with the Royal Bank branch in Sydney before the bank transferred him to Vancouver, British Columbia. From there, he moved to California, where he acted on the stage before making inroads into Hollywood. MacDonald started as an actor in films in 1914 and starred in almost 120 motion pictures between then and 1932. He had notable roles in such films as ''Youth's Endearing Charm'' in 1916 working with Mary Miles Minter and Harry von Meter. Late in World War I, he returned briefly to Nova Scotia to enlist in the 10th Canadian Siege Battery where he assisted in recruiting for the Canadian Army. The ''Moving Picture World'' was an influential early trade journal for the American film industry, from 1907 to 1927. An industry powerhouse at its height, ''Moving Picture World'' frequently reiterated its independence from the film studios. In 1911, the magazine bought out ''Views and Film Index''. Its reviews illustrate the standards and tastes of film in its infancy, and shed light on story content in those early days. By 1914, it had a reported circulation of approximately 15,000. The publication was founded by James Petrie (J.P.) Chalmers, Jr. (1866–1912), who began publishing in March 1907 as ''The Moving Picture World and View Photographer''. Doris May (born Helen Garrett; October 15, 1902 – May 12, 1984), was an American actress of the silent era. She appeared in 29 films between 1917 and 1927, generally as a leading lady. Most of her roles were in western film, westerns and comedy film, comedies, although she also starred in some melodramas. ''A Girl Named Mary'' is a 1919 American silent romantic drama film produced by Famous Players-Lasky and distributed by Paramount Pictures. ''The Marriage Speculation'' is a 1917 comedy-drama film directed by Ashley Miller. Plot Mr. Cliday is an old man who has saved $10,000 after 20 years of employment at a pickle factory. He decides to invest the money in young Clara Wilson's education if she agrees to marry a rich man who will ensure that Mr. Cliday has enough money to support himself for the rest of his life. However, this means that Clara Wilson has to leave her current lover, Billie Perkins. Clara does not like any of the men who Cliday wants her to marry, but she nonetheless agrees to marry an Italian count. By the time of the wedding, Billy is able to pay Mr. Cliday the money needed to insure his retirement. At the wedding, Billy wears a disguise to look like the count. ''Tillie's Punctured Romance'' is a 1914 American silent comedy film directed by Mack Sennett and starring Marie Dressler, Mabel Normand, Charlie Chaplin, and the Keystone Kops. ''Dough and Dynamite'' is a 1914 American comedy silent film made by Keystone Studios starring Charlie Chaplin. Plot The story involves Chaplin and Chester Conklin working as waiters at a restaurant. Charlie is especially inept and his comic carelessness enrages the customers. The workers in the restaurant's bakery go on strike for more pay, but are fired by the unsympathetic proprietor. Charlie is put to work in the bakery where his lack of skills upsets his boss and co-worker Chester Conklin. Meanwhile, the vengeful strikers have arranged to smuggle a loaf of bread concealing a stick of dynamite into the bakery. During a free-for-all involving Charlie, Chester, and their boss, the dynamite dramatically explodes. At the end of the film, Charlie emerges groggily from a pile of sticky dough.
