Fulling
Fulling, also known as felting, tucking or walking ( Scots: ''waukin'', hence often spelled waulking in Scottish English), is a step in woollen clothmaking which involves the cleansing of woven or knitted cloth (particularly wool) to eliminate (lanoline) oils, dirt, and other impurities, and to make it shrink by friction and pressure. The work delivers a smooth, tightly finished fabric that is isolating and water repellent. Well known example are duffel cloth, first produced in Flanders in the 14th century and loden, produced in Austria from the 16th century on. The practice to do this by hand or feet died out with the introduction of machines during the industrial revolution. Process Fulling involves two processes: scouring and milling (thickening). Originally, fulling was carried out by the pounding of the woollen cloth with a club, or the fuller's feet or hands. Alistair Walker
Alistair "Al" Walker (born 21 March 1944 in Dewsbury, Yorkshire – died 25 January 2021 in Dale, Pembrokeshire) was a racing driver from England. He participated in Formula 3, Formula 2, World Championship of Makes The World Sportscar Championship was the world series run for sports car racing by the FIA from 1953 to 1992. The championship evolved from a small collection of the most important sportscar, endurance, and road racing events in Europe and North ..., and the South African Springbok Series. Alison Bridget Walker is a physicist who is a professor at the University of Bath. Her research considers computational modelling of printed electronic devices and the development of perovskite solar cells. She is best known for her work on the Kinetic Monte Carlo method. Early life and education Walker was born in Sarawak. She completed her undergraduate and postgraduate studies at the University of Oxford. Her doctoral research considered nuclear quadrupole interactions and fast ionic conductors. After earning her doctorate, Walker moved to the United States, where she joined Michigan State University as a postdoctoral fellow. She moved to the Daresbury Laboratory as a research fellow. Walker took a degree in media and communication studies at the University of Sunderland, followed by a postgraduate diploma in Business and Secretarial Studies. On graduating, her first job was as a runner for a film production company in Glasgow, eventually becoming their producer of corporate and training videos. Alick Walker
Alick Donald Walker (26 October 1925 – 4 December 1999) was a British palaeontologist, after whom the ''Alwalkeria'' genus of dinosaur is named. He was born in Skirpenbeck, near York and attended Pocklington School from 1936 to 1943. He began a degree course in engineering at Cambridge, but dropped out in 1944. In 1948 he returned to university after national service, reading Geology at the University of Bristol. On graduation, he join the research group of Professor Stanley Westoll at the University of Newcastle upon Tyne, working on the fossil reptiles of the Late Triassic found in Elgin. He was appointed Lecturer in Geology in 1954, while working on his PhD. The bony remains of the Elgin reptile fossils were poor, sometimes just indentations in rocks. Walker devised a new casting method to capture the anatomical information in these fossils, using PVC; many of the resulting casts are now in the National Museum of Scotland and the Natural History Museum. Alf Walker
Alfred Samuel Walker (26 August 1884 – 14 September 1961) was an English footballer who played in the Football League for Wolverhampton Wanderers. Career Walker played for Wolverton, Northampton Town and Brentford, before joining Wolverhampton Wanderers for a £150 fee in April 1910. He scored twice 35 games for the club, as they posted eighth and ninth places finishes in the Football League Second Division in 1909–10 and 1910–11. He joined non-League Port Vale in 1911, and enjoyed regular football in Burslem, helping the club to lift the Birmingham Senior Cup in 1913. However, he lost his place in October 1913 and after colliding with low railings at The Old Recreation Ground on 26 January 1914 was out of action for some time.
