Waldfriedhof Zehlendorf
Waldfriedhof Zehlendorf (Zehlendorf forest cemetery) is a cemetery located in Berlin's Nikolassee district. The cemetery occupies an area of 376,975 m2. An additional Italian war cemetery was created there in 1953. A number of notable people of Berlin are buried at the cemetery; some have a ''grave of honor'' (german: Ehrengrab). In particular, all of Berlin's deceased post-war mayors are buried here. Landscape and buildings The northern part of the cemetery was built between 1945 and 1947 by Herta Hammerbacher, and expanded from 1948 to 1954 by Max Dietrich. About a third of the area was forest, which was already 50 years old and was intentionally kept. The trees are mostly firs, with a few oaks, mountain-ashes and birches. Two straight paths in north–south direction structure the cemetery, connected by curved paths. The funeral halls are situated on a natural hill. An ''Ehrengrab'' (English: 'grave of honor') is a distinction granted by certain German, Swiss and Austrian cities to some of their citizens for extraordinary services or achievements in their lifetimes. If there are no descendants or institutions to care for the gravesites, the communities or cities will take responsibility for the graves and for financing their care. Many ''Ehrengräber'' (honor graves) also serve to document cultural history; for example, when a cemetery containing artistically notable graves is closed and the graves are moved at public expense. The basic details of the awarding, financing and care of honorary graves are similarly handled in all German-speaking countries. Berlin and Vienna maintain the largest number of such sites. Jan Bontjes Van Beek
Jan Bontjes van Beek (born 18 January 1899 in Vejle, Denmark; † 5 September 1969 in Berlin) was a German ceramicist, sculptor and dancer. Life Between 1905 and 1915 Bontjes van Beek attended the elementary school and real high school in Uerdingen. He became a German national in 1907. Between 1915 and 1919, Beek worked as a volunteer in the Imperial German Navy. After his volunteer service he spent several months working in the artists colony in Fischerhude and Worpswede where he met artists, sculptors like Heinrich Vogeler, Otto Modersohn, Bernhard Hoetger, Hans Heinz Stuckenschmidt and others. In 1920 he met and married to Olga Bontjes van Beek, née Breling, who was the daughter of artist Heinrich Breling. She was a dancer and also artist. The couple had three children. Boris Blacher
Boris Blacher (30 January 1975) was a German composer and librettist. Life Blacher was born when his parents (of German-Estonian and Russian backgrounds) were living within a Russian-speaking community in the Manchurian town of Niuzhuang () (hence the use of the Julian calendar on his birth record). He spent his first years in China and in the Asian parts of Russia, and in 1919, he eventually came to live in Harbin. In 1922 he went to Berlin where he began to study first architecture, mathematics, and then music at the Berlin Hochschule fuer Musik. He found work arranging popular and film music. Two years later, he turned to music and studied composition with Friedrich Koch. His career was interrupted by National Socialism. Günther Birkenfeld
Günther Birkenfeld (9 March 1901 - 22 August 1966) was a German writer. His books were banned during the Nazi years but he remained in the country and was conscripted for aircraft monitoring during the war. During the postwar period, in what had become the Soviet occupation zone, he was a co-founder, in 1948/49, of the anti-communist Combat Group against Inhumanity (''"Kampfgruppe gegen Unmenschlichkeit"''). Life Günther Birkenfeld was born in Cottbus and grew up in Berlin. He received his doctorate in 1923, and went on to work as an editor with the publishing house. Kammersänger (male) or Kammersängerin (female), abbreviated Ks. or KS, is a German honorific title for distinguished singers of opera and classical music. It literally means "chamber singer". Hans Beirer
Hans Beirer (23 June 1911, in Wiener Neustadt – 24 June 1993, in Berlin) was an Austrian heldentenor and Kammersänger. He was a regular company member at the Deutschen Oper Berlin, Wiener Staatsoper and Hamburgischen Staatsoper and is best known internationally as an interpreter of the work of Wagner. While Beirer never appeared at the Metropolitan Opera, he sang with the New York City Opera, in 1950, in ''Die Meistersinger'' and ''Aida''. Tatjana Gsovsky (/''Tatjana Wassiljewna Gsowskaja'', born Issatschenko ; 18 March 1901 – 29 September 1993) was an internationally known ballet dancer and choreographer who was ballet mistress of the Berlin State Opera, Teatro Colón, Deutsche Oper Berlin and Oper Frankfurt. An influential teacher, she is remembered for first choreographies of works by contemporary composers including Boris Blacher, Werner Egk, Hans Werner Henze, Giselher Klebe, Luigi Nono and Carl Orff. Career Tatjana Issatschenko was born in Moscow and studied there, first art history. She studied ballet in the studio of Isadora Duncan in St. Petersburg.
