Waikerie Football Club
The Waikerie Football Club is an Australian rules football club which compete in the Riverland Football League. The club was formed in 1908 and was a foundation member of the Mid Murray FL in 1910. Riverland Football League
The Riverland Football League is an Australian rules football league located in South Australia's Riverland region. The league has two divisions - the first division is for the main towns of the Riverland and the second division, called the Riverland Independent Football League, is for the minor towns. Australian football, also called Australian rules football or Aussie rules, or more simply football or footy, is a contact sport played between two teams of 18 players on an oval field, often a modified cricket ground. Points are scored by kicking the oval ball between the central goal posts (worth six points), or between a central and outer post (worth one point, otherwise known as a "behind"). During general play, players may position themselves anywhere on the field and use any part of their bodies to move the ball. The primary methods are kicking, handballing and running with the ball. There are rules on how the ball can be handled; for example, players running with the ball must intermittently bounce or touch it on the ground. Russell Ebert
Russell Frank Ebert (22 June 1949 – 5 November 2021) was an Australian rules footballer and coach. He is considered one of the greatest players in the history of Australian rules football in South Australia. Ebert is the only player to have won four Magarey Medals, which are awarded to the best and fairest player in the South Australian National Football League (SANFL). He is one of four Australian rules footballers to have a statue at Adelaide Oval, the others being Ken Farmer, Malcolm Blight and Barrie Robran. Football historian John Devaney described Ebert as coming "as close as any player in history to exhibiting complete mastery over all the essential skills of the game," and he is widely regarded as the Port Adelaide Football Club's greatest ever player. Mark Ricciuto
Mark Anthony Ricciuto ( ; born 8 June 1975) is a former Australian rules footballer who played for the Adelaide Football Club in the Australian Football League (AFL). From Ramco, South Australia, Ricciuto started as a junior with the local Waikerie Magpies Football Club. He joined the West Adelaide Football Club in the South Australian National Football League (SANFL), making his debut at the age of 16, before being recruited by Adelaide as a zone selection prior to the 1993 season. Playing as a midfielder, he established himself in Adelaide's side, receiving a nomination for the AFL Rising Star in 1993, his debut season, and being named in the All-Australian team the following season, the first of eight selections overall. Having played in Adelaide's premiership side in 1998, also winning the Malcolm Blight Medal as the club's best and fairest, Ricciuto replaced Mark Bickley as the club's captain prior to the 2001 season. Brad Helbig
Bradley Helbig (born 28 February 1992) is an Australian rules footballer who played for the Richmond Football Club in the Australian Football League (AFL). Originally from the West Adelaide Football Club in the South Australian National Football League (SANFL), Helbig was drafted to Richmond with their third selection, the forty-seventh overall, in the 2010 AFL draft. Helbig made his AFL debut in Round 1, 2011 against Carlton at the MCG. In July 2011 he extended his contract until the end of the 2013 season. Luke Jericho
Luke Jericho (born 18 October 1984) is an Australian rules footballer, formerly for Adelaide in the AFL. He was recruited as a second round pick in the 2002 AFL Draft, selection number 32 overall. He made his debut in 2004, against St Kilda, and kicked a goal on debut. He ended up playing 15 games for the year, and scoring 10 goals. Jericho now plays for Norwood in the SANFL. In 2005, he played just the 5 games, scoring 5 goals, including a four-goal haul against Essendon in Round 11. In the 2006 season, he could not break into the team, and opted to have a shoulder reconstruction in July, meaning he would be sure to miss the rest of the season. In 2007, he once again found himself on the outer. With injuries to Brett Burton and Mark Ricciuto, he was called up to play against the Brisbane Lions at the Gabba.
