The town of Waikerie derives its name from Weikari, which is claimed to mean 'the rising'. The River News
''The River News'' was a weekly newspaper published in Waikerie, South Australia, published from July 1956 until April 2020. History ''The River News'' was begun on 19 July 1956 by Colin Hetzel of the Waikerie Printing House with his wife, Meg Hetzel, and was founded as a direct result of the 1956 Murray River floods. In an interview, Colin Hetzel stated that "All went well until there was the 1956 flood – and we could see that this was our opportunity to publish a local newspaper, as the only local paper was The Murray Pioneer (based at Renmark)." ''The River News'' has had four editors in its history – Colin Hetzel, Jack Pick, John Pick, and Craig Treloar. The newspaper was sold to the ''Murray Pioneer'' in 1962 but retained an office on Peake Terrace, Waikerie. Mark Anthony Ricciuto ( ; born 8 June 1975) is a former Australian rules footballer who played for the Adelaide Football Club in the Australian Football League (AFL). From Ramco, South Australia, Ricciuto started as a junior with the local Waikerie Magpies Football Club. He joined the West Adelaide Football Club in the South Australian National Football League (SANFL), making his debut at the age of 16, before being recruited by Adelaide as a zone selection prior to the 1993 season. Playing as a midfielder, he established himself in Adelaide's side, receiving a nomination for the AFL Rising Star in 1993, his debut season, and being named in the All-Australian team the following season, the first of eight selections overall. Sturt Highway
Sturt Highway is an Australian national highway in New South Wales, Victoria, and South Australia. It is an important road link for the transport of passengers and freight between Sydney and Adelaide and the regions situated adjacent to the route. Initially an amalgam of trunk routes, the Sturt Highway was proclaimed a state highway in 1933. In 1955, the Australian Government gazetted the highway as a National Route, and upgraded it as a National Highway in 1992, forming the Sydney-Adelaide Link. The Murray River in south-eastern Australia has been a significant barrier to land-based travel and trade. This article lists and briefly describes all of the recognised crossing points.
