Wade Hampton High School (Varnville, South Carolina)
Hampton County Highschool is a public high school within Hampton County School District, located between the towns of Hampton and Varnville, South Carolina, United States. The high school serves students in those communities in addition to students living in rural areas of northern and eastern Hampton County. The school served 719 students in the 2011–2012 school year. In August 2023, we have seen a significant change in the education scene of Hampton County. The well-known Wade Hampton High School has undergone a name change. This alteration is due to a merger with the neighboring Estill High School, leading to the formation of the new Hampton County High School. This establishment now has the unique distinction of being the sole public high school serving the community within Hampton County. Varnville, South Carolina
Varnville is a town in Hampton County, South Carolina, United States. The population was 2,162 as of the 2010 census. Varnville forms a twin town with Hampton, the county seat; the two towns often share civic and cultural events. History Varnville was founded by the Varn Brothers, who sold the right-of-way for railroad tracks through their sawmill in 1872, prior to Hampton County's founding. In 1878, Hampton County was created from Beaufort County, and the site for the county seat was located northwest of Varnville, eventually becoming the town of Hampton. Varnville grew as a result of its close proximity to the county seat as well as its connections with surrounding agricultural areas. Hampton is a town in Hampton County, South Carolina, United States. The population was 2,808 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Hampton County. The town and the county are named after Wade Hampton III, a Confederate general in the Civil War. History Hampton County was created from northwestern portions of Beaufort County in 1878 by the South Carolina General Assembly. In appreciation for helping to end the Reconstruction Era and leading the Democratic Party, the county was named after the sitting governor, Wade Hampton III. Hampton County is a rural county located in the U.S. state of South Carolina. As of the 2020 census, the population was 18,561. Its county seat is Hampton. It was named for Confederate Civil War general Wade Hampton, who in the late 1870s, with the ending of Reconstruction, was elected as governor of South Carolina. The Redeemers were a political coalition in the Southern United States during the Reconstruction era of the United States, Reconstruction Era that followed the American Civil War, Civil War. Redeemers were the Southern wing of the Democratic Party (United States), Democratic Party. They sought to regain their political power and enforce white supremacy. Wade Hampton III
Wade Hampton III (March 28, 1818April 11, 1902) was an American military officer who served the Confederate States of America during the American Civil War and later a politician from South Carolina. He came from a wealthy planter family, and shortly before the war he was one of the largest slaveholders in the Southeast as well as a state legislator. During the American Civil War, he served in the Confederate cavalry, where he reached the rank of lieutenant general. At the end of Reconstruction, with the withdrawal of federal troops from the state, Hampton was leader of the Redeemers who restored white rule. His campaign for governor was marked by extensive violence by the Red Shirts, a paramilitary group that served the Democratic Party by disrupting elections and suppressing black and Republican voting in the state.
