Wabeno (community), Wisconsin
Wabeno is an unincorporated census-designated place located within the town of Wabeno, in Forest County, Wisconsin, United States. It is located on Wisconsin Highway 32 at the eastern terminus of Wisconsin Highway 52 within the Nicolet National Forest. As of the 2010 census, its population is 575. History The unincorporated community of Wabeno was built in an area where timber had been cleared by a tornado in June 1880. Wabeno was platted in 1897. The town's name is derived from "waubeno" a Potawatomi word for "coming of the winds". A brief lumber boom occurred when the Chicago and North Western Railway pushed a line through the tiny town. In 1905, there were five sawmills in operation in Wabeno, producing of lumber per year. The last mill closed in 1936. Wisconsin Highway 52
State Trunk Highway 52 (often called Highway 52, STH-52 or WIS 52) is a state highway in the U.S. state of Wisconsin. It runs east–west in central and northeastern Wisconsin from Wabeno to Wausau. It is one of four state highways that also serve Antigo. Route description Running from west to east, Highway 52 begins at an interchange with the Wisconsin Highway 29 freeway segment near Rib Mountain. Almost immediately, Highway 52 also has an interchange with the U.S. 51 freeway, which serves as Wausau's western bypass. It then enters Wausau as Stewart Street, crossing the Wisconsin River into downtown. Chicago And North Western Railway
The Chicago and North Western was a Class I railroad in the Midwestern United States. It was also known as the "North Western". The railroad operated more than of track at the turn of the 20th century, and over of track in seven states before retrenchment in the late 1970s. Until 1972, when the employees purchased the company, it was named the Chicago and North Western Railway (or Chicago and North Western Railway Company). Potawatomi
The Potawatomi , also spelled Pottawatomi and Pottawatomie (among many variations), are a Native American people of the western Great Lakes region, upper Mississippi River and Great Plains. They traditionally speak the Potawatomi language, a member of the Algonquin family. The Potawatomi call themselves ''Neshnabé'', a cognate of the word ''Anishinaabe''. The Potawatomi are part of a long-term alliance, called the Council of Three Fires, with the Ojibway and Odawa (Ottawa). State Trunk Highway 32 (often called Highway 32, STH-32 or WIS 32) is a state highway in the U.S. state of Wisconsin that runs north–south in eastern Wisconsin. It runs from the Illinois border (at Illinois Route 137) north to the Michigan border (concurrent with U.S. Highway 45). It is named the 32nd Division Memorial Highway after the U.S. 32nd Infantry Division, and the highway shields have red arrows—the division's logo—on either side of the number 32.
