Waaia Football Club
The Waaia Football Netball Club, nicknamed the Bombers, is an Australian rules football and netball club playing in the Picola & District Football League. The club is based in the small Victorian town of Waaia, approximately 220 km from Melbourne. History "Waaia Football Club" can be said to have originated in 1894. Over the next couple of decades the club competed in a number of different leagues and associations. In 1935, the club commenced an involvement in the Picola and District competition that continues to this day. Waaia's first premiership was won in 1953. Its 1990 premiership is folklore in the district with Mick Cleeland's 50 m torpedo goal giving the Bombers a come-from-behind victory after the final siren had sounded. The Picola & District Football Netball League is an Australian rules football and netball league affiliated with the AFL Victoria Country. The league covers a large area of northern Victoria, Australia, Victoria and southern New South Wales from Shepparton, Victoria, Shepparton in the south to Jerilderie, New South Wales, Jerilderie in the north and consists of teams from the smaller communities and towns. Australian football, also called Australian rules football or Aussie rules, or more simply football or footy, is a contact sport played between two teams of 18 players on an oval field, often a modified cricket ground. Netball is a ball sport played on a court by two teams of seven players. It is among a rare number of sports which have been created exclusively for female competitors. The sport is played on indoor and outdoor netball courts and is specifically played in schools. Netball is most popularly played in Commonwealth nations. A common misunderstanding of the sport's origins has resulted in the mistaken belief that netball was created to prevent women from playing basketball. Anthony Stevens
Anthony Stevens (born 2 July 1971) is a former Australian rules footballer who played for the North Melbourne Kangaroos. He was named as ruck rover in the club's official 'Team of the Century'. Stevens was a member of North Melbourne premiership sides in 1996 and 1999. In 1998, he was an All-Australian; additionally, in the same year, he represented Victoria at State of Origin football. He was a Best and Fairest winner for his club twice, in 1997 and 1999. Gary Stevens (Australian Rules Footballer)
Gary Stevens (born 10 October 1972) is a former Australian rules footballer who played with the Sydney Swans in the Australian Football League (AFL). Stevens was the second member of a Waaia family to play in the AFL, after his elder brother Anthony. A third brother, Michael, also played in the league. He won a Morrish Medal in the 1991 AFL Under 19s Competition, the last before the formation of the TAC Cup. In the 1992 AFL season, Stevens made four senior appearances. Michael Stevens (footballer)
Michael Stevens (born 7 November 1980) is a former Australian rules footballer who played for Port Adelaide and the Kangaroos in the Australian Football League (AFL). Stevens was a member the Murray Bushrangers inaugural TAC Cup premiership in 1998 and was voted 'Best on Ground' in the Grand Final victory over the Geelong Falcons. On the back of his performances at Under-18 level, Stevens was the fifth player picked in the 1998 AFL draft. A wingman, he was unable to hold on to a spot in the Port Adelaide team although he did participate in their 2002 Wizard Cup triumph. He joined his elder brother Anthony Stevens at the Kangaroos in 2003, after being traded for Stuart Cochrane. Picola is a town in northern Victoria, Australia. The town is located in the Shire of Moira local government area, from the state capital, Melbourne. At the , Picola had a population of 334. Picola Post Office opened on 24 August 1878 and closed in late 2010. The Australia Post outlet was then taken over by the Picola Hotel, until early 2011. The hotel remains a community postal agent.
