Gary Stevens (Australian Rules Footballer)
Gary Stevens (born 10 October 1972) is a former Australian rules footballer who played with the Sydney Swans in the Australian Football League (AFL). Stevens was the second member of a Waaia family to play in the AFL, after his elder brother Anthony. A third brother, Michael, also played in the league. He won a Morrish Medal in the 1991 AFL Under 19s Competition, the last before the formation of the TAC Cup. In the 1992 AFL season, Stevens made four senior appearances. Sydney lost all four of those games as well as the only other game he played in 1993, meaning he never got to celebrate a win while with the Swans. Waaia Football Club
The Waaia Football Netball Club, nicknamed the Bombers, is an Australian rules football and netball club playing in the Picola & District Football League. The club is based in the small Victorian town of Waaia, approximately 220 km from Melbourne. History "Waaia Football Club" can be said to have originated in 1894. Over the next couple of decades the club competed in a number of different leagues and associations. In 1935, the club commenced an involvement in the Picola and District competition that continues to this day. Waaia's first premiership was won in 1953. Its 1990 premiership is folklore in the district with Mick Cleeland's 50 m torpedo goal giving the Bombers a come-from-behind victory after the final siren had sounded. TAC Cup
The NAB League Boys (also referred to as simply the NAB League and formerly known as the TAC Cup) is an under-19 Australian rules football representative competition held in Australia. It is based on geographic regions throughout country Victoria and metropolitan Melbourne with each team representing twelve Victorian regions, while a thirteenth team from Tasmania was reintroduced in 2019. The competition is sponsored by National Australia Bank (NAB), having previously been sponsored by the Transport Accident Commission (TAC) since its inception. The Goulburn Valley Football Netball League is an Australian rules football and netball competition based in the Goulburn Valley region of Victoria, Australia. It is a member of the Victorian Country Football League and has won the Victorian Country Football Championships in 2003 and 2005. History The league was initially called the Goulburn Valley District Football Association(GVDFA) and dates back to May, 1893. 1992 AFL Season
The 1992 AFL season was the 96th season of the Australian Football League (AFL), the highest level senior Australian rules football competition in Australia, which was known as the Victorian Football League until 1989. The season featured fifteen clubs, ran from 21 March until 26 September, and comprised a 22-game home-and-away season followed by a finals series featuring the top six clubs. Prior to the season, the AFL ceased its role as the administrative body for football in Victoria after 95 years: this role was transferred, along with control of the reserves competition, to the newly established Victorian State Football League (VSFL). Subsequently, the Victorian AFL clubs' under-19s competition was dissolved, and zone-based recruiting was abolished. Morrish Medal
The Morrish Medal is an Australian rules football award. Formerly awarded to the best and fairest player in the VFL Under-19 competition (known as the Thirds prior to 1959), since 1992 the award has been given to the best player in the Victorian Statewide Under-18 competition (presently known as the NAB League) The Morrish Medal was named in honour of Tom Morrish, a long-serving treasurer (1921–1967) of the VFL Reserve Grade. Tom was a member of the VFL Umpires Appointment Board from 1937 to 1964. He was previously a Collingwood delegate in the 2nd XVIII league and also became a Geelong delegate in the 2nd XVIII committee in 1937. 1989 VFL Draft
The 1989 VFL draft was the fourth annual national draft held by the Victorian Football League (since changed its name to Australian Football League) as the main method for the 14 teams to recruit players for the 1990 season. It consisted of a trading period, pre-draft selections, the main national draft and the 1990 pre-season draft and a non-compulsory 1990 mid-year draft. The minimum age for most draftees was 16 and clubs other than the West Coast Eagles were only allowed to choose one player each from Western Australia. For the non-Queensland and NSW clubs, players from those states had to be 19 to be selected, by which time the Brisbane Bears or Sydney Swans would have had three chances to recruit them. Michael Stevens (footballer)
Michael Stevens (born 7 November 1980) is a former Australian rules footballer who played for Port Adelaide and the Kangaroos in the Australian Football League (AFL). Stevens was a member the Murray Bushrangers inaugural TAC Cup premiership in 1998 and was voted 'Best on Ground' in the Grand Final victory over the Geelong Falcons. On the back of his performances at Under-18 level, Stevens was the fifth player picked in the 1998 AFL draft. A wingman, he was unable to hold on to a spot in the Port Adelaide team although he did participate in their 2002 Wizard Cup triumph. He joined his elder brother Anthony Stevens at the Kangaroos in 2003, after being traded for Stuart Cochrane. Stevens was a regular in the side throughout 2004 and missed just two games, polling his first and only Brownlow Medal votes when he was awarded three for a performance against Carlton. Anthony Stevens
Anthony Stevens (born 2 July 1971) is a former Australian rules footballer who played for the North Melbourne Kangaroos. He was named as ruck rover in the club's official 'Team of the Century'. Stevens was a member of North Melbourne premiership sides in 1996 and 1999. In 1998, he was an All-Australian; additionally, in the same year, he represented Victoria at State of Origin football. He was a Best and Fairest winner for his club twice, in 1997 and 1999. Stevens lost two litres of blood and had two operations after injuries caused when falling glass hit Stevens outside the Redback Brewery Hotel in North Melbourne on 11 March 2000. Stevens suffered a 20-centimetre gash from the corner of his mouth along his right cheek and down the side of his mouth.
