WWE Action Figures
WWE action figures are poseable action figures based on wrestlers and personalities of WWE. They are currently manufactured by Mattel and have formerly been manufactured by Jakks and Hasbro. LJN With the rise in popularity that the wrestling industry experienced during the 1980s, Titan Sports (the parent company of the WWF) contracted LJN to produce the first wrestling action figures in 1984. The figures stood at 8" tall. In 1989 LJN closed its toy division, and the WWF contract was awarded to Hasbro. Hasbro Hasbro began producing the company's action figures in 1990. The toys were manufactured from plastic and although not fully articulated, had various spring-loaded action features such as punches and clotheslines, although they were not unique to each figure. Jakks Pacific Production of WWF/E toys by the Jakks Pacific corporation began in 1996, and ended in December 2009. Action Figures
An action figure is a poseable character model figure made most commonly of plastic, and often based upon characters from a film, comic book, military, video game or television program; fictional or historical. These figures are usually marketed toward boys and adult collectors. The term was coined by Hasbro in 1964 to market G.I. Joe to boys (while competitors called similar offerings ''boy's dolls''). According to a 2005 study in Sweden, action figures which display traditional masculine traits primarily target boys. While most commonly marketed as a child's toy, the action figure has gained widespread acceptance as collector item for adults. Wrestling Superstars
''Wrestling Superstars'' were the first action figures based on the wrestlers of the WWF. Wrestling action figures were the brainchild of Richard Derwald of Buffalo NY who sold the idea to LJN in the summer of 1984. (Video in references). They were made by the toy and video game company LJN from 1984 to 1989. The figures were made of solid rubber and paint and were very accurate in appearance to their real life counterparts. LJN closed its toy division in 1989, canceling the ''Wrestling Superstars'' line with it. The last six figures produced were only distributed by Grand Toys of Canada making them rarer than most of the other figures. The line was restarted in 2021 by Jazwares, which produced an action figure of Cody Rhodes with LJN branding for All Elite Wrestling. WWE Legends Action Figures (Mattel)
At the Toyfair 2010 in New York City, Mattel revealed the WWE Legends action figure line. The figures are elite style and some also come with accessories. Series 1 arrived at stores in July 2010 with Series 2 right around the corner to be hitting the shelves in August 2010. Series 3, 4, 5 and 6 were announced at the 2010 San Diego ComicCon and followed in tow, being released to stores in September 2010, October 2010, November 2010 and December 2010 respectively. There was much hype surrounding the line from collectors, most notably for WWE legend Ricky "The Dragon" Steamboat, who had not had a WWE (WWF) figure released of himself since his WWF Hasbro figure in 1992.
