It airs a News/ Talk format. Programming In addition to its regular programming, this station airs the "dLife Diabetes Minute" health advisory program and Major League Baseball games as an affiliate of the Atlanta Braves radio network. Ownership The station began operations in October 1962 as WBNB (the callsign stood for ''B''ob a''N''d ''B''ob, as in Bob Noble and Bob Moss, the station's co-founders) co-owned with the now-defunct WBNB-TV, the Virgin Islands' first television station. WVJZ (105.3 FM) is a radio station licensed to serve Charlotte Amalie, U.S. Virgin Islands. The station is licensed to GARK LLC which is wholly owned by Gordon P. Ackley as part of the Ackley Media Group. It airs a Mainstream Urban and Reggae music format. Lonely Planet's guide to the Virgin Islands describes this station as "the station for continuous R&B" in the USVI. The Federal Communications Commission assigned the WVGN call letters to this station on December 23, 1985. It held this call sign until switching to the current WVJZ call letters on June 15, 1998. Ownership GARK LLC, originally a partnership between Gordon Ackley and Randolph Knight, was acquired solely by Gordon Ackley in April 2006 when Ackley bought out Knight's 50% interest for an undisclosed sum. WIVI (102.1 FM, "Pirate Radio") is a radio station licensed to serve Cruz Bay, U.S. Virgin Islands. The station is licensed to Ackley Caribbean Enterprises, Inc. which is wholly owned by Gordon P. Ackley as part of the Ackley Media Group. It airs a classic rock format. Lonely Planet's 2001 guide to the Virgin Islands described this station as, "probably the most popular rock & roll station" in the USVI. The station had branded itself as "Pirate Radio" before a flip to the "Hitz 96" moniker on October 1, 2009 and again reverting to the "Pirate Radio" moniker in 2015. The station swapped call signs and formats with sister station WIVI on July 1, 2017. Awards WWKS was chosen as ABC Radio Network's international affiliate of the year for 1999. The Atlanta Braves Radio Network is a 138-station network (97 A.M., 41 F.M. stations + 1 F.M. translator) heard across ten states and one territory of the Southeastern United States that airs Major League Baseball games of the Atlanta Braves. The flagship station is WCNN in Atlanta, Georgia. The primary booth announcers are Ben Ingram and Joe Simpson, who alternate between play-by-play and color commentary on most game broadcasts, with Jim Powell also calling select games. WBNB-TV, VHF analog channel 10, was a CBS- affiliated television station licensed to Charlotte Amalie, on the island of Saint Thomas in the United States Virgin Islands. The station operated from 1961 until 1989. History WBNB-TV was the first television station to operate in the Virgin Islands. Its construction permit was secured in 1960 by a pair of New York City-area radio men, Robert Noble and Robert Moss, who shared equal ownership in Island Teleradio Service, Inc., the original licensee of WBNB-TV and sister station WBNB radio (1000 AM, now WVWI); their names ("Bob and Bob") served as the basis for the station's callsign. Charlotte Amalie ( ), located on St. Thomas, is the capital and the largest city of the United States Virgin Islands. It was founded in 1666 as Taphus (meaning 'beer house' or 'beer hall' in Danish). In 1691, the town was renamed to Charlotte Amalie after Charlotte Amalie of Hesse-Kassel (1650–1714), queen consort to King Christian V of Denmark-Norway. Benedek Broadcasting
Benedek Broadcasting was a television broadcasting company, who owned and operated 22 network-affiliated television stations throughout the United States, all affiliated with major television networks, serving mainly small and medium-size markets. The company was founded in the late 1970s by A. Richard Benedek but grew in the 1990s with buyouts of Brisette Broadcasting and Stauffer Communications. The company was based in Hoffman Estates, Illinois. Throughout its existence, namesake Benedek served as chairman and chief executive officer. Benedek also owned U.S. Virgin Islands station WBNB-TV starting in 1986, but was knocked off the air by Hurricane Hugo in 1989. Its facilities were so badly damaged that Benedek, with no financial resources to rebuild, essentially chose to abandon the station, and its license was deleted in 1995. Hurricane Hugo was a powerful Cape Verde tropical cyclone that inflicted widespread damage across the northeastern Caribbean and the Southeastern United States in September 1989. Across its track, Hugo affected approximately 2 million people. Its direct effects killed 67 people and inflicted $11 billion (equivalent to $ billion in ) in damage. Hurricane Marilyn was the most powerful hurricane to strike the Virgin Islands since Hurricane Hugo of 1989, and the third such tropical cyclone in roughly a two-week time span to strike or impact the Leeward Islands, the others being Hurricane Iris and the much more powerful and destructive Hurricane Luis.
