The station was originally licensed to Morovis, Puerto Rico and It was the first station nationwide to operate an experimental synchronous booster at Manati, P.R. in 1987. Blanco-Pi had to sell the station on 1991 to acquire WAPA 680 AM in order to expand the NotiRadio Network. The experience he acquired with WCQC's experimental synchronous booster made him possible to expand the NotiRadio network using this technology. WBQN (680 AM) is a radio station licensed to San Juan, Puerto Rico, broadcasting a news-talk format. The station serves as the flagship station of the Borinquen Radio News Network and is owned by Wifredo G. Blanco-Pi (d/b/a Grupo AM Puerto Rico). It is an affiliate of CNN en Español radio news network. The station is rebroadcast by translator station W237FF 95.3 FM also located in San Juan. The station was relayed through an experimental synchronous station, WA2XPA Arecibo, which also broadcasts on 680 kHz. On April 19, 2017 the Federal Communications Commission ruled that WA2XPA's license will not be renewed. The ruling stated that it must discontinue operation on May 7, 2017 and the license would be cancelled on May 8, 2017. WMIA (1070 AM) is a radio station licensed to serve Arecibo, Puerto Rico. The station is owned by Wifredo G. Blanco Pi and it is part of the Borinquen Radio News Network. It airs a news/talk format and features programming from CNN Radio. The station is shared with translator station W227DY 93.3 FM also in Arecibo. The station was assigned the WMIA call letters by the Federal Communications Commission. Ownership In 1957, WMIA begins operations on 1070 kHz, WMIA was owned and operated by Abacoa Radio Corporation until April 2017. On March 2, 2017, Wifredo G. Blanco Pi reached an agreement to purchase WMIA from Abacoa Radio Corp. The sale was completed on April 12, 2017. This becomes the fifth station of the WAPA Radio News Network. AM broadcasting is radio broadcasting using amplitude modulation (AM) transmissions.
