WVCW
WVCW's origins began in 1968 in the basement of the Millheiser House as a carrier current AM radio station known as WJRB, which stood for James River Broadcasting. After a successful run as WJRB, the station changed its call letters in apx 1977 to WVCW. At the time the student staff was trying to expand WJRB from a club into a real radio station, and tried to change the call letters to WVCU. After being told that they station could not be called WVCU, the station asked the FCC for permission to change its call letters to WVCW (double-U) as a way to stick it to the man. In 1976, WVCW was named one of the top college radio stations in the country by Billboard magazine (12/25/76 issue). WHAN is an adult album alternative formatted broadcast radio station licensed to Ashland, Virginia, serving Ashland and Hanover County, Virginia as well as the northern half of the Metro Richmond, Virginia region. WHAN is owned by Stu-Comm, Inc. WHAN currently simulcasts WNRN. History On February 1, 2015, Charlottesville-based public broadcaster WTJU began simulcasting its programming on WHAN in an attempt to use its FM translator to reach the Richmond market. Variety is a radio format that plays music across numerous genres. Free-form variety is associated with a wide range of programming including talk, sports, and music from a wide spectrum. WTJU is a Variety formatted broadcast radio station licensed to Charlottesville, Virginia, serving Charlottesville and Albemarle County, Virginia. WTJU is owned and operated by University of Virginia. History WTJU was founded in 1955 when U.Va.’s Department of Speech and Drama decided to start an educational radio station to serve the larger community. WUVA, the university's carrier current AM station, had been broadcasting popular music to students since 1947.
