WHAN (AM)
WHAN is an adult album alternative formatted broadcast radio station licensed to Ashland, Virginia, serving Ashland and Hanover County, Virginia as well as the northern half of the Metro Richmond, Virginia region. WHAN is owned by Stu-Comm, Inc. WHAN currently simulcasts WNRN. History On February 1, 2015, Charlottesville-based public broadcaster WTJU began simulcasting its programming on WHAN in an attempt to use its FM translator to reach the Richmond market. WTJU operated the station daily from 1am to 6pm as part of a three-year local marketing agreement. Through a separate agreement with WTJU, Virginia Commonwealth University webcaster WVCW broadcast on WHAN Monday through Thursday from 6pm to 1am and Friday from 9pm to 1am, with additional broadcasting time allowed for special events. Ashland, Virginia
Ashland is a town in Hanover County, Virginia, United States, located north of Richmond along Interstate 95 and U.S. Route 1. As of the 2010 census it had a population of 7,225, up from 6,619 at the 2000 census. Ashland is named after the Lexington, Kentucky estate of Hanover County native and statesman Henry Clay. It is the only incorporated town in Hanover County. WVCW
WVCW's origins began in 1968 in the basement of the Millheiser House as a carrier current AM radio station known as WJRB, which stood for James River Broadcasting. After a successful run as WJRB, the station changed its call letters in apx 1977 to WVCW. At the time the student staff was trying to expand WJRB from a club into a real radio station, and tried to change the call letters to WVCU. After being told that they station could not be called WVCU, the station asked the FCC for permission to change its call letters to WVCW (double-U) as a way to stick it to the man. In 1976, WVCW was named one of the top college radio stations in the country by Billboard magazine (12/25/76 issue). In North American broadcasting, a local marketing agreement (LMA), or local management agreement, is a contract in which one company agrees to operate a radio or television station owned by another party.
