The station changed its call letters to WJFR in 1976, with a talk radio format. For a short time from 1982 until 1983, the station became WXLY-FM, running a country format. Retaining the format, the station changed its call letters to WYYN during the year. The station's studios are in Ridgeland, with a transmitter located west of the city along the Natchez Trace Parkway. History The station was assigned the WIIN call letters by the Federal Communications Commission on July 31, 1995. This station has had many formats over its history. Some of these included: classical, easy listening, inspirational talk, talk shows hosted by African-American hosts and appealing to African-American audiences, all-news, blues, golden oldies pop, all-Spanish speaking, big band, talk shows hosted by female hosts appealing to female audiences, and Southern-gospel. WHJT (93.5 FM broadcasting, FM, "93.5 The Legend) is an American radio station city of license, licensed to serve Kearney Park, Mississippi, United States. The station was owned and operated by Mississippi College until 2017. Its studios and transmitter were based on campus from the Aven Fine Arts Building. Mississippi College sold WHJT to New South Radio in March 2017. The station's new 12,000-watt transmitter is located off Highway 49, in Pocahontas, Mississippi, Pocahontas. Its new studio is located at 265 Highpoint Drive, in Ridgeland, Mississippi, Ridgeland. WHJT had previously broadcast a contemporary Christian radio format, format to the Jackson, Mississippi, area from Easter Sunday 1989 until midnight on July 31, 2017. WYOY
WYOY (101.7 FM, "Y101") is a Top 40/CHR station in Jackson, Mississippi. WYOY debuted in September 1996, and gave the Jackson area its first Top 40 station since 1993. Its studios are located in Ridgeland and the transmitter site is in Raymond. History Originally licensed to Canton, Mississippi, Lles Communications put WWLM on the air January 6, 1976, but only for a short time. Issues with the construction permit prompted the station to go dark later that year. After Lles transferred the station to Donald G. Manuel in 1980, it returned in 1981 as WDGM, airing classical music. WDGM flipped to a rock format on July 7, 1982, going by the name "Rock 102". The rock, however, would be short-lived. On September 10, a fire destroyed the station's temporary studios in a mobile home. History The city of Madison, named for James Madison, the fourth President of the United States, developed along a bustling railroad track in antebellum Mississippi. It began in 1856 when the Illinois Central Railroad opened Madison Station, the forerunner of the city of Madison. The nearby town of Madisonville was a settlement along the stagecoach route on the Natchez Trace. Raymond, Mississippi
Raymond is a city in Hinds County, Mississippi, United States. As of the 2010 census, the city population was 1,933; in 2020, its population was 1,960. Raymond is one of two county seats of Hinds County (along with Jackson) and is the home of the main campus of Hinds Community College. Raymond is part of the Jackson metropolitan statistical area. History In 1829, three commissioners, including John B. Peyton, were appointed by U.S. President Andrew Jackson to find a place near the center of Hinds County for the county seat. The current location of Raymond is a ridge about a mile from the center of the county, and was selected because the actual center was low and subject to flooding. Ridgeland, Mississippi
Ridgeland is a city in Madison County, Mississippi, United States. The population was 24,047 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Jackson, Mississippi metropolitan area. History In 1805, the Choctaw Indian Agency, headed by Silas Dinsmoor, was located in what is now known as Ridgeland. There is also a neighborhood called Dinsmor in Ridgeland. The structure was then called Turner Brashear's Stand until about 1850. It was adapted for use as a hotel named the King's Inn. During the American Civil War, King's Inn was used as a headquarters by General Stephen Lee. Afterward, it again operated as a hotel until 1896, when it was destroyed by fire. In 1853, James B. Yellowley founded the community of Yellowley's Crossing (later named Jessamine after his wife).
