WUSH HD
WUSH (106.1 FM) is a country music formatted broadcast radio station licensed to Poquoson, Virginia, serving Hampton Roads. WUSH is owned and operated by Sinclair Telecable, Inc. WUSH is licensed by the FCC to broadcast in the HD Radio, HD radio format. History The 106.1 frequency was formerly a translator for WROX-FM to service signal dropouts in Downtown Norfolk. This signed on in 1995 and was turned off in 2003. In April 2001, a full-powered frequency signed on the air at 106.1 as WEXM, serving the Eastern Shore of Virginia (with a city of license of Exmore, Virginia, Exmore), and simulcasting WNOB, WKOC. The simulcasting would be discontinued in March 2004, as 106.1 would relocate their tower to Hampton, Virginia, Hampton and be re-licensed to Poquoson. On March 7, 2004, the 106.1 signal would debut as Adult Hits WPYA "106.1 Bob-FM". Poquoson, Virginia
Poquoson (), informally known as Bull Island, is an independent city in the Commonwealth of Virginia. As of the 2020 census, the population was 12,460. The Bureau of Economic Analysis combines the city of Poquoson with surrounding York County for statistical purposes. Poquoson is located on the Virginia Peninsula, in the Hampton Roads metropolitan area. Poquoson, which was formerly part of York County, became an incorporated town in 1952 and an independent city in 1975. (In Virginia, municipalities incorporated as independent cities are not part of any county.) However, the ties remain close. Over 30 years after Poquoson became a politically independent entity, some constitutional services such as the courts, sheriff and jail continue to be shared with neighboring York County. HD Radio
HD Radio (HDR) is a trademark for an in-band on-channel (IBOC) digital radio broadcast technology. It generally simulcasts an existing analog radio station in digital format with less noise and with additional text information. HD Radio is used primarily by AM and FM radio stations in the United States, Canada, and Mexico, with a few implementations outside North America. The term "on channel" is a misnomer because the system actually broadcasts on the ordinarily unused channels adjacent to an existing radio station's allocation. This leaves the original analog signal intact, allowing enabled receivers to switch between digital and analog as required. In most FM implementations, from 96 to 128 kbps of capacity is available. High-fidelity audio requires only 48 kbps so there is ample capacity for additional channels, which HD Radio refers to as "multicasting". ''The Playhouse'' was a Portland, Oregon-based syndicated morning drive time radio show that debuted on February 12, 2000. It originally aired weekday mornings between 5-10am on then-flagship radio station KXJM (Jammin 107.5 FM), with the last four hours of the show being broadcast live online with fully produced video, and repeated every four hours until the next show. The show was also on at various hours in the morning on its syndicated affiliates. From its conception on February 12, 2000 to May 12, 2008 the show's flagship station was the "Original" Jammin' 95.5 KXJM (now KXTG). ''The Playhouse'' also had a nightly TV show called ''Playhouse TV'' that aired on Comcast's on-demand service in the Portland and Eugene areas. WNVZ (104.5 FM "Z104") is a commercial radio station licensed to Norfolk, Virginia, serving Hampton Roads. WNVZ is owned and operated by Audacy, Inc. It airs a rhythmic top 40 radio format. The studios and offices are at Audacy's Hampton Roads headquarters on Clearfield Avenue in Virginia Beach. The transmitter tower is off East Pembroke Avenue in Hampton. History The station first signed on in July 1967 as WTID-FM. It was the FM sister station of WTID (1270 AM, now WPMH) in nearby Newport News.
