WTVML
{{refimprove, date=November 2011 WTVML is an XML-based and WML-derived content format designed to allow web site operators to easily develop and deploy Interactive TV services, typically it reduces the time taken for web site operators to create a TV Site, and results in the Site being deployable on a larger number of devices, and is capable of being automatically validated, tested and transformed. WTVML was originally developed by Ian Valentine and Patrick Sansom in a company called WapTV. After demonstrating the ability to develop Interactive TV services using web infrastructures and XML, and successfully deploying them to existing TV set-top-boxes over dial up modems, the company was acquired by BSkyB. WapTV now Miniweb was the name given to the company which originated the WTVML (Worldwide TV Mark-up Language) as a content format for the delivery of Interactive TV applications using Internet Servers. The system is an Interactive television technology platform comprising a mobile browser, a markup language, and a significant collection of associated software tools and services. The mobile browser and mark-up language are both based upon the Open Mobile Alliance WML 1.3 specification. The WTVML mobile browser is currently available only as an OpenTV application, although an MHP version of the WapTV browser has been built for demonstration and proof of concept. An emulator exists, based on Craftwork's, STBe OpenTV middleware emulation. The WTVML markup language is a heavily extended superset of the WAP Forum WML 1.3 specification. Interactive television is a form of media convergence, adding data services to traditional television technology. It has included on-demand delivery of content, online shopping, and viewer polls. Interactive TV is an example of how new information technology can be integrated vertically into established technologies and commercial structures. A TV site is a website designed for viewing on a television set. Unlike mobile and PC access, the use of internet sites through the TV has been small, mostly due to the poor user experience of many "web on TV" deployments, and the "walled garden" or closed platform business models adopted by many TV network operators. With the advent of IPTV and Broadband enabled TV Devices web site owners have realized, that like Mobile, TV needs to be considered as a different media, and that Mobile, TV and PC based internet access all present different user interface design challenges in order to make the services usable and acceptable to consumers on the device they are using. Wireless Markup Language
Wireless Markup Language (WML), based on XML, is a now-obsolete markup language intended for devices that implement the Wireless Application Protocol (WAP) specification, such as mobile phones. It provides navigational support, data input, hyperlinks, text and image presentation, and forms, much like HTML (Hypertext Markup Language). It preceded the use of other markup languages used with WAP, such as XHTML and HTML itself, which achieved dominance as processing power in mobile devices increased. A content format is an encoded format for converting a specific type of data to displayable information. Content formats are used in recording and transmission to prepare data for observation or interpretation. This includes both analog and digitized content. Content formats may be recorded and read by either natural or manufactured tools and mechanisms. Internet Protocol television (IPTV) is the delivery of television content over Internet Protocol (IP) networks. Portable Content Format
The DVB's Portable Content Format (PCF) is a data format designed by the DVB project for the description of interactive digital television (iTV) services. It is intended to support the business-to-business interchange of interactive content and to enable deployment on multiple target platforms with a minimum amount of re-authoring. Digital television platforms offer a wide variety of interactive services. However, different television platforms use different technologies for interactive services and so a large amount of interactive content has to be developed bespoke for each platform.
