WQON
WQON (100.3 FM, "Q 100.3") is a radio station broadcasting an album-oriented rock (AOR) format. Licensed to Grayling, Michigan, the seat of government in Crawford County, it first began broadcasting in 1978. The station brands itself as ''Q-100''. History WQON: The early years WQON arose out of the staff of AM competitor WMQU, WGRY, which first went on the air in 1970. Wayne Hindmarsh, one of that station's original employees, left WGRY to put his own station on the air. With an intended target date of June 16, 1977, unexpected delays pushed WQON-FM's debut on the air to 12:06 p.m., November 6, 1978. Local owners were Ernie Dawson, William Scheer, Wayne Hindmarsh, and Chris Vansteenhouse. Located at 502 Norway street, a sign went up in the window stating "We're on the Air" 100.1 FM. WGRY-FM
WGRY-FM (101.1 MHz, "Up North Sports Radio") is a radio station broadcasting a sports format. Licensed to Roscommon, Michigan, it first began broadcasting in 1990. WGRY-FM is owned by Sheryl and Gerald Coyne, through licensee Blarney Stone Broadcasting, Inc., and is co-owned with WMQU and WQON, at its facilities in Grayling. History As WGRY-FM WGRY-FM's roots can be traced back to as early as 1978, when a radio station in Grayling debuted at 100.1 FM with the call letters WQON, competing against separately-owned MOR/country music-formatted WGRY/1590 (now 1230). Both stations would compete against one another for ten years, until William S. Gannon purchased WGRY in 1988. WMQU (1230 AM) is a radio station which previously broadcast a sports format until March 2016 when it became an affiliate of Baraga Radio, a regional Catholic radio network based in Traverse City, Michigan. As of now it is currently affiliated with Catholic radio network Relevant Radio. Licensed to Grayling, Michigan, the station is owned and operated by Sheryl & Gerald Coyne, through licensee Blarney Stone Broadcasting, Inc. Blarney Stone also owns WGRY-FM and WQON, co-located at WMQU's broadcast facilities in Grayling. History When the then-WGRY went on the air at 1590 AM in August 1970, the staff included Co-owners, James Sylvester as Station Manager and Jim Marr as Engineer. WYPV
WYPV (94.5 FM) is a radio station based in Mackinaw City, Michigan, which airs an album oriented rock (AOR) format. Programming is simulcasted on 100.3 WQON in Grayling and 106.3 WWMN in Thompsonville. History The station's original call letters were WSSW (for the station's founder, Sonora S. Wray), which were first issued in October 1986. WSSW first signed on at 94.3 on September 6, 1989, with an automated MOR format, but went dark not long after that. The station, while at 94.3, was a Class A station with an ERP of 3,000 watts, which made the station all but unlistenable outside of the Mackinaw City-St. Ignace area, a seasonal, tourist-driven market barely able to sustain the competing radio stations that were already on the air and firmly established. WWMN (106.3 FM) is a radio station owned by John Yob, through licensee Mitten News LLC. Licensed to Thompsonville, Michigan, the station serves the Traverse City market with a coverage area extending from the tip of the Leelanau Peninsula south to Manistee and Cadillac. History WWMN began operations in May 1971 as WKLA-FM and spent much of its programming day simulcasting its AM sister station throughout the 1970s. Around 1980, the station further separated programming from the AM's Middle of the Road format by moving into Adult Contemporary, which has been the station's format since, although the station still simulcast the AM during certain dayparts until 2000. WLLS
WLLS (99.3 FM) is a radio station in Beulah, Michigan. The station, which began broadcasting in 1979, is owned by Traverse City broadcaster Roy E. Henderson under the "Fort Bend Broadcasting" banner and has long been the primary local station for the Frankfort area and Benzie County. It was formerly simulcast on WCUZ 100.1 FM licensed to Bear Lake, Michigan, which now airs a talk format as Talk Radio 1340 WMTE (although the actual WMTE-AM 1340 remains silent as of July 2012). WLLS's coverage area does not extend far east of Traverse City and Cadillac to protect co-channel WATZ-FM in Alpena, but the station can be heard across Lake Michigan in parts of northeastern Wisconsin. WCMV-FM (94.3 Leland, Michigan) is a Central Michigan University-owned retransmission station of WCMU. Until February 29, 2020, it simulcast an Adult Hits format with WFDX branded as Music Radio, The Fox FM. WCMV-FM serves the Traverse City area with 20,500 watts. History In the early 1990s, the station signed on as WIAR 94.3, an oldies station simulcasting WAIR. On Thanksgiving 1997, WIAR flipped to country as B94.3 and their call letters changed to WBYB. WAIR remained oldies for more than a year until they started simulcasting with WBYB again under the new name B92.5/B94.3 with their call set being WBYC. On February 24, 2003, The Bee flipped to classic hits as The Fox. WFDX (92.5 Atlanta, Michigan) is a Northern Radio-owned station that is currently silent due to a pending sale. Until February 29, 2020, it simulcasted an Adult Hits format with WFCX branded as Music Radio, The Fox FM. WFDX's 100,000-watt signal serves most of northern Michigan including Alpena, Gaylord and Petoskey, while WFCX, the flagship, served the Traverse City area with 20,500 watts. WFDX signed on in 1989 as WAIR, owned by Rick Stone (who now owns WJML Radio in Petoskey). At first, they aired an adult contemporary format with WNIC/Detroit's Johnny Williams doing a voicetracked version of his "Pillow Talk" show for nights. Grayling, Michigan
Grayling ( ') is a city and the county seat of Crawford County in the U.S. state of Michigan. It is the only incorporated community in Crawford County. The population was 1,884 at the 2010 census. The city is surrounded by Grayling Charter Township, but the two are administered autonomously. The city is located in the middle of the Northern Michigan region at the junctions of Interstate 75, U.S. Route 127, M-72, and M-93. Grayling is well known for hosting the Au Sable River Canoe Marathon in July of every year since 1947. The city is named after the Grayling species of fish once abundant in the Au Sable River, although the species has long since been extinct in the area.
